Embodiment Construction

[0026] The following definitions and descriptions provide background information relevant to the technical field of the present invention, which facilitates understanding of the present invention, but are not intended to limit the scope of patent protection of the present invention:

[0027] Container: A subtree of the global namespace. It groups a set of storage slot objects for load balancing and management purposes.

[0028] IP Network (IP Network): Internet Protocol network. IP specifies the format and addressing scheme for packets, also known as datagrams. Most networks combine IP with a higher-level protocol called the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) that establishes virtual connections between destinations and sources.

[0029] Metadata: Data about data, such as tags indicating the subject of a WWW document. Metadata describe, for example, how, when, and by whom a specific data set was collected, how the data is formatted, and where the data is placed.

Abstract

An intelligent router routes a user request to a storage server that is capable of handling that request natively, without emulation. The request is routed automatically, without any instruction or interaction on the part of the user. The intelligent router includes a storage tank-like computing environment and a set of intelligent routers. The set of intelligent routers appears as a single entity to users by presenting a single network IP address. When the intelligent router receives a request, it examines the protocol type and routes the request to one of the appropriate storage tank clients. The intelligent router does not change the contents of the request message, and thus the storage tank system do not become aware of the existence of the intelligent router. Consequently, any return messages do not need to go through the intelligent router, unless desired.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a distributed object storage system for heterogeneous environments. In particular, the present invention relates to a system and method that enables several users with different network protocols to natively communicate with a single system for service. Background technique [0002] A large enterprise, such as a company with many employees, typically runs many networked computers. These computers need to store their data in a way that other computers in the enterprise can access. This is usually accomplished by using a file system and file server to store shared files in a common storage system. File system clients communicate with file servers using a well-defined network file protocol. When a computer creates a file, it is written to the disk by the file server. When the file is read by the same or another computer, the data is read from the disk, passed through the file server, and then sent to the computer reque...
