An upper GI endoscopy is a diagnostic procedure used by your doctor to inspect the inside of your throat, esophagus, stomach and upper intestine. While it’s considered a surgical procedure, endoscopy does not involve an incision.

Two-phase instrument guidance for accurate endoscopic surgical procedures

A two-stage method for guiding an endoscope and second device toward a target destination near the ROI includes navigation and localization. The endoscope is navigated near the vicinity of the ROI according to a pre-procedure plan. When the ROI location is reached, the second device's tip is pushed far enough through the endoscope so that its tip is outside the endoscope and in the endoscope's video view. Then a two-phase registration mechanism is used: i. Phase 1: Align the endoscope by registering the endoscope's video to a virtual bronchoscope's simulated video stream; ii. Phase 2: Align the second device by registering the second device's shape in the endoscope's video to a virtual second device model.

A steerable arm having sections that bend in different planes

A STEERABLE ARM HAVING SECTIONS THAT BEND IN DIFFERENT PLANES A steerable arm for use in endoscopic surgical procedures. The steerable arm cut from a tube of nitinol to provide flexibility and resilience by the structure into which the tube is cut. A hollow continuum tubular member of resilient material having two bending sections, each bending section having a series of spaced gaps along a side of the tubular member let the section of tubular member bend by closing up, the series gaps of each section offset angularly about the axis on different sides of the tubular member to that each section bends in a different plane. A preferred embodiment has three sections that bend in different planes. Method of making steerable surgical arm for use in endoscopes during surgical procedures

A method of making the tubular body of a steerable arm for use in an endoscopic surgical procedure, comprising the steps of: providing a piece of metal configured into a plurality of coils defining the tubular body; inserting at least one wire into the tubular body; bending the tubular body and the wire inside; heating the bent tubular body with the wire inside; such that the tubular body and the wire memorise the bend.

Extemporaneous route planning during live endoscopic surgical procedures

A methodology is for deriving a guidance route to any selected site including an unplanned ROI site observed in a radiologic imaging view or endoscopic video view on an assisted-endoscopy system during a live surgical endoscopic procedure based on a preloaded initial procedure plan. The initial procedure plan can be updated by identifying a new site s at the unplanned ROI on one of graphical visualization tools of an image-guided endoscope system as a new examination destination and automatically computing the new navigation airway route that leads to the new examination destination.

Smoke suction flow regulator

PendingUS20260000883A1Surgical needlesMedical devicesEndoscopic operationsRotational freedom
A smoke evacuation flow regulator for use with a suction source to rapidly remove excess smoke during an endoscopic surgical procedure is described. The smoke evacuation regulator may include a body having a gas pathway and a knob assembly threadably attached to the body that is sized to completely open or completely close the gas pathway in a single revolution of the knob assembly. The head of the knob assembly may be sized and shaped to permit tactile determination of the rotational position of the knob assembly in low vision situations. The body of the smoke evacuation flow regulator may include a knob assembly retaining arm that cooperates with a disk or extension on the knob assembly to allow rotational freedom of the knob assembly, but prevent inadvertent removal of the knob assembly from the body during use.
