Interactive content preservation and customization technology is placed at the broadcast facility to ensure reliable transmission of the interactive content to a local subsystem. An interactive content code detector detects interactive content codes in the video stream at the broadcast facility. The interactive content code detector is placed in the transmission path before the video stream is transmitted to broadcast facility hardware that may strip out, destroy, corrupt or otherwise modify the interactive content and interactive content codes. Once an interactive content code detector detects a code, an interactive broadcast server determines what action to take, and instructs an data insertion unit accordingly. The interactive content codes or interactive content may be placed in a portion of the video that is guaranteed by the broadcast facility to be transmitted, for example, the closed caption region of the vertical blanking interval.

A gate shift register and an organic light emitting diode display including the same are disclosed. The gate shift register includes a first stage and a second stage that output image display gate pulses during an image data writing period and selectively output a sensing gate pulse in a vertical blanking interval in which image display data is not written. The first stage includes a node Q1, a node Qbo, a node M, a first sensing control block activating the node Q1, and a second sensing control block deactivating the node Qbo. A system is disclosed that can be used to enhance a video of an event. Sensors are used at the event to acquire information. For example, the system can include pan, tilt and zoom sensors to acquire camera view information. This information can be added to the video signal from a camera (e.g. in the vertical blanking interval) or otherwise transmitted to a central studio. At the studio, the sensor information is used to enhance the video for broadcast. Example enhancements include drawing lines or other shapes in the video, adding advertisements to the video or adding other graphics to the video.

A method and apparatus provides for providing an indication of a static frame. In one example, the method and apparatus notifies the arrival of a static frame by changing a vertical blanking interval for the static frame. For example, the method and apparatus may determine that a display frame is a static frame if no graphic processing activity and/or lack of update to the frame buffer have been detected for a period of time. In response to a display frame being a static frame, the method and apparatus may change the vertical blanking interval that is immediately before the static frame by increasing the number of blanking scan lines in the vertical blanking interval. The changed vertical blanking interval may be transmitted with the static frame as an indicator of the arrival of a static frame, so that the apparatus may enter a self-refresh mode to repeatedly display the static frame.

A detector circuit (1) for detecting the presence or absence of a television (2) on an output (3) of a video DAC (4) comprises a comparator (11) for comparing a voltage developed by the video signal on a control resistor R2 with a reference voltage of 0.5 volts. The resistor R2 is of 75 ohms and matches the internal impedance R1 of 75 ohms of the television (2). A latch (12) latches the output from the comparator (11) onto an output pin Q when the voltage developed across the control resistor R2 is developed by an equalisation pulse of the vertical blanking interval of the video signal. In the presence of a television (2) the voltage developed across the control resistor R2 is 0.35 volts, which pulls the output of the comparator (11) low, while in the absence of a television (2) the voltage developed across the control resistor R2 is 0.7 volts which pulls the output of the comparator (11) high. A control logic control circuit (21) reads the output pin Q of the latch (12) for powering up or powering down the video DAC (4) as appropriate.

A central insertion control unit controls the insertion of additional material while a remote insertion control unit locally controls the insertion of the additional material. The central insertion control unit contains a processor, storage media, and an encoder for encoding control and information signals into a broadcast signal. The control signal contains a cue signal for information about play lists, and an action signal for triggering insertion of the additional material. The control signal is encoded into a line of the vertical blanking interval. Once the control is detected by the remote insertion control unit the additional material is played and broadcast.

Techniques are described that can be used to adjust a refresh rate of a display device. For example, the refresh rate change can be triggered by a user application for a variety of circumstances such as a change in power source from AC to DC or display of 24 frames per second (fps) video. The vertical blanking interval (“VBI”) of a video signal is used in broadband communications including digital data transmission on the VBI or a dual VBI/PCS system capable of enhancing rapid deployment of wireless VBI communications or PCS services to a remote transceiver where no or marginally profitable infrastructure exists. A wireless digital communication system has a broadcast interface for encoding message information on the VBI of a video signal. The message information is encoded to a VBI format to form a pre-formatted signal. A broadcast device transmits an out-going signal having the pre-formatted signal modulated or otherwise embedded in the VBI. TeleWeb services are currently being developed, in which HTML-encoded images are transmitted in the vertical blanking interval of a conventional analog television signal. For special applications, such as subtitling and targeted advertising, the relevant TeleWeb images must be displayed substantially in synchronism with given video frames of the television signal. The system and method include selecting a metadata preference for use in a search of metadata associated with the broadcast media signals and selecting a notification preference for a notification format. The selected metadata preference and the selected notification preference are transmitted to a hosting system. The device can then receive, in the selected notification format, data corresponding to a broadcast media signal, the broadcast signal corresponding to the metadata preference. In one embodiment, the broadcast media signal is an analog or digital video signal. The metadata can be in a non-video portion of the broadcast television signal, for example, a vertical blanking interval or header field.
