Problems solved by technology

[0003] The disadvantage of this known configuration is that two (or more) holes intersect and their axes intersect on the longitudinal axis of the nail, with the result that considerable material is removed from the cross-section of the intramedullary nail, which results in a significant mechanical weakening of the nail at this location

Embodiment Construction

[0018] The intramedullary nail shown in Figures 1 to 3 has a distal end 2 adapted to be inserted into the medullary canal of a tubular bone, a proximal end 3, a central longitudinal axis 4, and two 6 of transverse holes 5 which each define a virtual bore cylinder 8 having a cylinder axis 9 which coincides with the bore axis 6 of the transverse bore 5 . The intramedullary nail has a substantially constant diameter D and a longitudinal hole 10 coaxial with the central longitudinal axis 4 .

[0019] As shown in Figure 3, the drilled cylinders 8 of the two transverse holes 5 penetrate each other, wherein the cylinder axes 9 of the two drilled cylinders 8 intersect with each other at point P, which is 10 m away from the longitudinal axis 4. A distance d=0.4D. In other words, point P is not on the longitudinal axis 4 of the intramedullary nail.

[0020] The interpenetrating drilling cylinders 8 have two separate entrances in the intramedullary nail 1 , but only one common exit fro...

Abstract

The invention relates to an intramedullary nail comprising: A) a distal end for introducing into the medullary space, the section of the nail facing the distal end having a diameter D; B) a proximal end; C) a central longitudinal axis; and D) a plurality of transversal boreholes having a borehole axis, said boreholes each defining a virtual borehole cylinder with a cylinder axis corresponding to the axis of the defining transversal borehole; E) the borehole cylinders of at least two transversal boreholes penetrating each other. The cylinder axes of both penetrating borehole cylinders have no common point of intersection P on the longitudinal axis. In this way, there is an improved mechanical resistance compared to prior art, without enlarging the cross-section of the nail.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an intramedullary nail, especially for the distal tibia. Background technique [0002] Intramedullary nails are known from the prior art which have two intersecting transverse holes at the same height, so that the same intramedullary nail can be used for both right and left tubular bones. [0003] The disadvantage of this known configuration is that two (or more) holes intersect and their axes intersect on the longitudinal axis of the nail, with the result that considerable material is removed from the cross-section of the intramedullary nail, which This results in a significant mechanical weakening of the nail at this location. Contents of the invention [0004] The present invention is to improve this situation. The object of the present invention is to realize an intramedullary nail with two (or more) intersecting transverse holes, which has improved mechanical strength compared with the above-mentioned prior art...
