Embodiment Construction

[0021] In a hydraulic tool for pressing or crimping electrical connectors onto conductors, such as the conventional tool 10 shown in FIG. As shown with reference to FIG. 2 , during extrusion of the workpiece 16 , the C-shaped head 18 of the tool's head frame 20 may deflect or bend. In the past, such as disclosed in US Patent No. 5,062,290, hydraulic tools have a dovetail key 21 mounted on a work head frame 20 . The dovetail groove 22 slides in the ram along the dovetail key 21 . However, the large force generated by the hydraulic pressure may cause the key 21 to break from the frame 20 .

[0022] Referring also to Figures 3 and 4, if a slidable interconnect is provided between the punch 12 and the head frame 20, the die holder portion 23 of the punch 12 will not follow the head when the frame deflects rearward. s frame. Therefore, misalignment of the two mold holder parts 23, 25 occurs. This can result in defective or insufficient extrusion or crimping.

Abstract

A working head (28) of a hydraulic tool includes a frame (46), a punch (48) and a connecting body between the punch and the frame (Fig. 6). The frame includes a first portion (63) having a hydraulic cylinder area, an opposing second portion (66), and an intermediate portion (64) connecting the first and second portions to each other. A ram is movably disposed in the region of the hydraulic cylinder and extends out of the first portion of the frame towards an opposite second portion of the frame. The connection between the punch and the middle part is formed by the middle part of the frame and the punch, wherein the middle part has two grooves (70) extending into opposite sides of the middle part, and the punches have approximately Two cantilevered hooks (76) facing each other (Fig. 7). The ends (78) of the hook are respectively slidably seated in said two grooves (Fig. 8) of the middle part.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a working head of a hydraulic tool, and more particularly, to a sliding connection between a punch and a frame of the working head. Background technique [0002] A hydraulic tool having a movable ram is disclosed in US Patent No. 5,062,290. The C-shaped head of the tool has a dovetail key that fits in a vertical groove. The punch has a dovetail groove that receives a dovetail key to form a sliding connection between the punch and the working head. US Patent No. 4,055,980 discloses a crimping tool comprising a frame having a groove and an underside mold part connected to a punch having two ribs extending into the groove. The ribs are arranged to constrain rotation about the ram axis. [0003] Hydraulic crimping tools with C-shaped heads are known in the art. The C-shaped heads of these tools are known to deflect due to the high forces generated by the tool. Although the C-head can be designed to minimize this deflection, de...
