Embodiment Construction

[0027] By way of example and not limitation, the invention will be described with reference to different embodiments. In particular, embodiments of the invention will be described in the context of a WIC. However, those skilled in the art will understand from the following description that the present invention can be widely applied to other technical fields.

[0028] As noted above, the increased speed and complexity of routing platform interfaces requires cards to be designed with a larger footprint and / or additional supplies available so that the card can perform more functions and consume more power. However, such cards require a different connector with additional pins for supplying the increased power while being able to connect to older cards.

[0029]Hereinafter, High Performance WIC (HWIC) will be referred to as Double Wide (DW) HWIC Card or Single Wide (SW) HWIC, and Legacy Card will be referred to as Single Wide (SW) WIC Card. HWIC can provide:

Abstract

A card-receiving connector includes a legacy connector part and an additional connector part that facilitates plugging in cards having improved functionality while also allowing legacy cards to be plugged in. In one embodiment, the legacy part includes signal, power, and supply contacts required by a legacy card and includes power and supply contacts required by an improved card in an extension part. A legacy card can be connected to the legacy part without interference from the extension part to facilitate backward compatibility with the legacy card.

Description

Background technique [0001] Incompatibility between new and existing products is a major problem in many technical disciplines including networking and signal switching. Often new products are developed with improved performance and speed, but users have invested heavily in legacy products. [0002] Incompatibility is a problem especially for routing platforms. Typically a router consists of a chassis, which can be mounted on a stand and has slots for inserting ports and modules, as well as basic components such as a power supply and a fan. The modules that plug into the slots are line cards that act as the actual printed circuit boards that handle packet data and analog signaling in and out. A line card sets up one or more interfaces through which information flows. Thus, depending on the number of slots and interfaces, the router can be configured to work with multiple network protocols. [0003] The user's main concern is to maximize the performance of existing chassis ...
