Methods and apparatus for transmitting uplink control information (UCI) in carrier aggregated spectrums are disclosed. UCI may include, but is not limited to, Precoding Matrix Indicator (PMI), Rank Indication (RI), Channel Quality Indicator (CQI), Acknowledge/Not Acknowledge (ACK/NACK) and Scheduling Request (SR). For symmetric carrier aggregation, uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) component carriers may be paired and use physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) in each UL component carrier to send UCI for the corresponding DL component carrier. For asymmetric carrier aggregation, methods are provided for UCI transmission and resource allocation depending on component carrier configuration or assignment. Methods are provided for multiple and single component carrier configurations that may further provide backward compatibility.

A method and system are disclosed that can be applied to achieve high-throughput in a WLAN. Central to the present invention is the use of an SDMA compatible multi-beam antenna system by a WLAN access point. A system based on two types of antennas-dynamic beam forming and fixed beam antennas—is described. A mechanism and protocol are described that implement simultaneous transmissions with respect to an SDMA compatible access point and thereby improve spectral efficiency, and by extension achieve higher throughput. Based on the recognition that current WLAN MAC has major limitations in throughput, certain MAC extensions (that can be applied independently of SDMA) are described. Also disclosed are power-saving and power control techniques that improve battery performance and contribute to a reduction in station size, and a means of reducing channel interference. In the technical proposal, a terminal is arranged on at least one component carrier wave of a subframe to receive and transmit data, and a network side uses the set corresponding DCI Format to send the uplink and downlink dispatching information for the terminal on the downlink component carrier wave according to an index of the component carrier wave; a terminal side detects the corresponding DCI Format on the downlink component carrier wave according to the index of the carrier wave, thereby realizing the flexible arrangement of DCI format of the uplink and downlink dispatching information which is sent on the downlink carrier wave component and used for the terminal, achieving better backward compatibility, as well as saving signaling cost and improving the performance of the LTE system within a limitation of a reasonable number of blind tests.

An inventive Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol for powerline networking systems is described. The inventive MAC protocol controls access to and use of a physical medium (power lines) in a powerline networking system. The MAC protocol method and apparatus includes a method of providing “blanking intervals” in which devices using newer versions of the protocol “clear out” earlier version devices. The use of blanking intervals greatly eases backward compatibility of the network when the protocol is upgraded with new versions. The method of using blanking intervals is closely coupled to a technique of using “beacons.” The beacons are used to propagate blanking interval information throughout the network. The beacons also include a mechanism for informing devices of the expiration of blanking information. The MAC also includes a method of establishing and maintaining “virtual circuit” connections between selected devices on the network. The virtual circuits can be established in powerline networking systems not having a central controller. A method of assigning unique Logical Network Identifiers (LNIs) to logical networks in the powerline networking system is also described. The LNIs uniquely identify each of the logical networks in the network. A means for creating, managing and distributing network encryption keys is also described. The encryption keys are used by the devices in the powerline networking system to prevent data from being shared with unauthorized users.

A robust data extension, added to a standard 8VSB digital television signal, is used to improve the performance of a digital television receiver. Robust data packets are encoded at a 1/3-trellis rate as compared to normal data packets that are encoded at a 2/3-trellis rate. In addition to delivery of robust data for mobile applications, the redundant robust data packets also improve the performance of the receiver in the normal tier of service. In particular, the robust data packets improve the performance of the receiver equalizer filter in the presence of rapidly changing transient channel conditions such as dynamic multipath for both robust data packets and normal data packets. The robust data packets improve the performance of the carrier recovery loop and the symbol timing recovery loop. An embodiment of the invention determines whether detected changes made to the software interface are likely to cause backward compatibility problems. Initially, an embodiment assembles and stores a snapshot of a baseline version of the software interface. Then, an embodiment assembles a snapshot of an updated version of the interface and compares the updated snapshot to the baseline snapshot to detect whether any changes have been made. Examples are provided on how to implement this idea in a CDMA platform and in a OFDM platform. For the CDMA system, the code space is automatically doubled or tripled and therefore a significant system capacity increase is realized. For OFDM systems, the throughput is doubled similar as 2×2 blasting. The system complexity is minimum and full standards backward compatibility can be achieved.

An apparatus and method of transparently relaying a signal in a direct link and a relay link using the same frequency band in a multihop relay Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) communication system. The method includes designating a start point of an asynchronous frame of the relay link by taking into account of a broadcast channel transmission interval of the direct link frame; and making a frame interval of the relay link null, where a transmission (Tx) mode of the direct link overlaps with another Tx mode. Accordingly, serving cell service coverage expansion and backward compatibility are achieved and a frame is constructed by selecting an optimum frame interval according to system information of the serving cell service. Therefore, efficient wireless access service can be provided.

A method of allocating a radio resource for a relay station in a wireless communication system is disclosed. The method comprise allocating a relay zone to the relay station in a subframe and transmitting a relay control channel to the relay station by using the relay zone, wherein the subframe comprises a plurality of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols in a time domain and a plurality of subcarriers in a frequency domain, wherein the subframe is divided into a user zone used by a user equipment in a cell and the relay zone used by the relay station, and wherein the relay zone comprises some of the plurality of subcarriers. According to the present invention, a subframe structure provides backward compatibility with a legacy wireless communication system. A relay station can effectively find a radio resource allocated to the relay station, thereby decreasing a decoding time.

A method of accommodating at least one difference between a first database schema and a second database schema is provided. The method includes receiving a request from a first application program that is operationally dependent upon the first database schema, the request being received at a second application program that is operationally dependent upon the second database schema. The transmission scheme uses a DeModulation Reference Signal (DM-RS) for channel response estimation. To secure backward compatibility of the LTE-A system, a Common Reference Signal is transmitted in normal subframes.
