Embodiment Construction

[0020] A list of acronyms follows at the end of this section.

[0021] The invention relates to defining new information measures and parameters, based on which resource allocation (such as power allocation or link adaptation) to communication links in a telecommunication network is performed. Before describing the present invention and exemplary embodiments in detail, some basic concepts and definitions will be explained to facilitate understanding of its principles.

[0022] New link-to-system interface and information parameters

[0023] The present invention is based on the identification of a new and improved link-to-system (L2S) interface, also known as a quality model, on the premise that good channel estimation / prediction and measurement can be obtained, and the practical best Optimal resource allocation rules / requirements (with or without ARQ / HARQ).

Abstract

A method of adapting resource allocation parameters to reach one or more quality targets with improved accuracy is proposed. New information measurements based on the so-called mutual information, preferably at block-level, are introduced. The MI-based information measurements of a previous transmission, the channel prediction of a subsequent transmission and one or more quality requirements, areused to determine the amount and type of resources, e.g. time, frequency and power resources, that are to be used for the subsequent transmission. The resource allocation can for example comprise power allocation and / or link adaptation and the invention enables an advantageous implementation with cooperative link-adaptation and power allocation. The proposed method is useful in connection with ARQ / HARQ retransmissions.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to telecommunication networks, and more particularly to resource allocation in such networks. Background technique [0002] Today, a common concern in telecommunication networks is how to allocate resources such as transmission power and frequency in an appropriate manner. Resources are limited, and due to the continuous growth of the number of links and users, the complexity of the network increases, so a more mature and complete solution is required. In general, efficient utilization of resources and reliable delivery are goals of concern. [0003] Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) and Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) are widely used in data transmission in order to maintain transmission quality. ARQ retransmits a data block when NACK feedback is received indicating incorrect reception. The receiver immediately discards failed blocks. The principle of HARQ is to buffer data blocks that are not correctly ...
