Problems solved by technology

As a result, the cooling fluid delivered to the racks is often mixed with the hot air generated by the components, thereby reducing the efficiency of heat transfer from the individual components to the cooling fluid
Furthermore, the hot air mixes with the cooling fluid, thereby reducing the temperature of the air returning to the air conditioning unit and thus reducing the efficiency of heat transfer at the air conditioning unit

Embodiment Construction

[0022] For purposes of simplicity and illustration, the present invention will be described primarily with reference to exemplary embodiments of the invention. In the following description, various specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. However, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that the practice of the present invention is not limited to these specific details. In other instances, well-known methods and structures have not been described in detail in order to unnecessarily obscure the present invention.

[0023] Throughout this specification, reference is made to "cooling fluid" and "thermal cooling fluid". For simplicity, "cooling fluid" may generally be defined as air that has been cooled by cooling equipment, such as a computer room air conditioning (CRAC) unit. Furthermore, "thermal cooling fluid" may be defined generally as a cooling fluid that is heated, for example, by receiving heat from ...

Abstract

An air conditioning unit (228) may be controlled based on an index of performance designed to qualify re-circulation levels. For the air conditioning unit control, an index of performace set point is determined (704, 804) and the index of performance for a first iterationis measured (706, 806). In addition, it is determined whether the measured index of performancefor the first iteration equals or exceeds the index of performance set point (708, 808). Moreover, a supply air temperature of the air conditioning unit (228) is increased in response to the measured index of performance for the first iteration equaling or exceeding the index of performance set point (710, 810).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is a continuation of US Patent Application Serial No. 10 / 446,854, filed May 29, 2003, entitled "Air Re-Circulation Index." The disclosure in this application is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety, and this application claims the filing date of that application. Background technique [0003] A data center may be defined as a place, such as a room, that houses computer systems arranged in multiple racks. A standard rack, such as an electronics cabinet, is defined as an Electronics Industries Association (EIA) enclosure that is 78 inches (2 meters) long, 24 inches (0.61 meters) wide, and 30 inches (0.76 meters) deep. These racks are configured to hold multiple computer systems, approximately 40, with future configurations of the racks designed to hold 200 or more systems. The computer system typically includes multiple components, such as one or more printed circuit boards (PCBs), mass stora...
