[0052] Substrates that may be used in the present invention are those known substrates suitable for use in time and time-temperature indicators that provide information based on the migration of a fluid along or across the substrate, respectively. Examples of suitable substrates include porous, wicking and absorbent materials for use in time and time-temperature indicators, such as those described in US-A-3243303, 4229813, 4382700, 4408557. Preferred substrates for use in the present invention are those having a microstructured surface, wherein the microstructured surface defines a plurality of channels. The substrate has a predetermined pattern of channels, wherein the channels have a maximum depth and width of less than about 1000 microns. These channels may or may not communicate with each other.
