The apparatus (1) outputs a processed video signal having an extended brightness range by adjusting the brightnesses in a third brightness range that includes a brightness value that is smaller than a minimum brightness value in the received video signal and in a fourth brightness range that includes a brightness value that is larger than a maximum brightness value in the received video signal by applying the calculated gradient values to the third and the fourth brightness ranges respectively.
