Problems solved by technology

In addition, prior art heating masks indiscriminately warm limbs with other areas, but heating limbs in severely hypothermic individuals releases pooled cold blood into the nuclear circulation, which in some patients can cause severe circulation problems

Embodiment Construction

[0018] FIG. 1 shows a casualty 10 encased in an exemplary advantageous embodiment medical heat shield 12 . Heat shield 12 may include an upper portion 14 (shown in top view in FIG. 3 ) and a lower portion 16 (shown in top view in FIG. 2 ).

[0019] Four major regions of the human body can be determined to have optimal peripheral and deep blood flow for heat dissipation: (a) most or all of the head 18 (except the face); (b) the neck most or all of 20; (c) most or all of chest 22 (also including shoulders and armpits); and (d) most or all of abdomen 24. The latter four regions can be located on the upper body (subject is supine as shown in Figure 1) or the anterior body (subject is upright). In this way, the heat shield can be divided into an upper part 14 and a lower part 16, whereby the upper part 14 of the heat shield comprises rather large sub-regions (zones) constituting four main zones for active heating, while the lower part 16 and The lower body of the subject (the wea...

Abstract

The invention relates to a heating sytem for releasing the problem of over low animal heat. A medical, electrically powered thermal cover for fitting predominantly the trunk and head of a person experiencing or potentially experiencing traumatic or cold-exposure hypothermia. The thermal cover encases all of the torso and neck, and portions of other body areas. Heating may be distinctly non-uniform, being applied to the body surface only in special regions where the body's capacity for heat uptake may be relatively high. In sum, the system may monitor deep body core temperature, direct heat to the body core where it may be most needed, and controls therapy over time to restore normothermia.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application is not a provisional application and claims priority to Provisional Application No. 60 / 682,531 filed May 18,2005. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to heating systems for maintaining or restoring normal body temperature in persons who may be or are actually hypothermic, especially during preparation, stay and transport from remote locations to associated medical facilities. Background technique [0004] It is well known that severe trauma or exposure to low temperatures in humans often induces hypothermia (reduction of body core temperature to health-threatening levels), which can complicate medical outcomes. Therefore, it is desirable to provide additional heat in addition to the heat normally generated by the body, for example, by applying a warming mask to the injured person. [0005] It is preferred that the enclosure is provided with electric or other active heaters to enhance the warming charact...
