Problems solved by technology

[0006] It is possible to minimize the risk by shutting off the engine and thus stopping the saw blade, but repeatedly stopping and starting the engine wastes time and causes wear and tear on the engine
Since running the engine allows the paving saw to be more easily driven (via a powered wheel assembly) and / or moved around the job site, loaded onto a trailer or other vehicle, etc., another disadvantage is to stop the engine (rather than only stops the rotation of the saw shaft drive)

Abstract

The invention provides a clutch-less belt drive system for pavement saw. The saw has an engine (16) mounted to a frame (12) via a pivot mount (14). The engine drives a first pulley (20), which is fixed relative to the engine (16). The first pulley drives a belt (22), which in turn drives a second pulley (24). The second pulley drives a saw blade (26). An actuator (18) is connected to the frame and to the engine so that the actuator extension rotates the engine in a first direction about the pivot mount, driving the first pulley against the belt and tautening the belt about the first pulley and the second pulley, and so that actuator retraction rotates the engine in a second direction counter to the first direction, releasing the first pulley from the belt and relaxing belt tension. A shroud (28) encircles the belt in a plane perpendicular to the line defined by the center of the first pulley and the center of the second pulley. The shroud is positioned so that when the belt tension is relaxed, the belt contacts the shroud and the resulting friction decelerates the belt.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims the priority date of Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 733671, filed November 3, 2005, by Ken Thornton et al., entitled "DISENGAGEABLE BELT DRIVE ASSEMBLIES FOR PAVEMENT SAWS." technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to belt drives, and more particularly to disengaged pavement saw belt drives. Background technique [0004] A pavement saw is a device used for cutting concrete pavements of roads and / or for cutting grooves / slots in road surfaces. One type of paving saw is a "concrete saw" used to cut concrete surfaces. A typical paving saw has a power motor that drives the rotating saw blade (part of the saw blade assembly). The motor and blade assembly are mounted to a rigid frame supported by a set of wheels. In operation, the paving saw is typically placed directly on the road surface to be cut and the saw blade is configured to be lowered into the cutting locatio...
