Embodiment Construction

[0026] see figure 1 , which illustrates a multiple access wireless communication system according to an embodiment. Base station 100 includes a plurality of antenna groups 102, 104, and 106 each including one or more antennas. exist figure 1 In , only one antenna is shown for each antenna group 102 , 104 , and 106 , however, multiple antennas may be used for each antenna group corresponding to a sector of the base station 100 . Mobile station 108 communicates with antenna 104 , which transmits information to mobile station 108 via forward link 114 and receives information from mobile station 108 via reverse link 112 . Mobile station 110 communicates with antenna 106 , where antenna 106 transmits information to mobile station 110 via forward link 118 and receives information from mobile station 110 via reverse link 116 .

[0027] Each antenna group 102, 104, and 106 and / or the area in which the antenna group is designed to communicate is often referred to as a sector of a ba...

Abstract

A plurality of transmission patterns for pilot systems transmitted from a mobile station or base station are provided. Depending upon the frequency selectivity and / or the time selectivity of the channel between the mobile station and the base station, an appropriate pattern is selected. The selected pattern allows for improved receipt of the pilot symbols. In addition, scrambling codes can be applied to the patterns for reducing interference and / or biasing the different mobile stations over the same frequencies and in the same slots.

Description

technical field [0001] This document relates generally to wireless communications and more particularly to pilot information transmission in Orthogonal Frequency Division wireless communication systems. Background technique [0002] Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) systems utilize Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). OFDM is a multicarrier modulation technique that divides the entire system bandwidth into multiple (N) orthogonal frequency subcarriers. These subcarriers may also be referred to as tones, frequency bins, and frequency channels. Each subcarrier can be modulated with data. Up to N modulation symbols may be sent on N total subcarriers in each OFDM symbol period. These modulation symbols are converted to the time domain by an N-point Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) to produce transformed symbols containing N time-domain chips or samples. [0003] In a frequency hopping communication system, data is transmitted on differe...
