Embodiment Construction

[0018] As used herein, "MR" refers to multi-faceted display lights as known in the art. For example, the MR16 lamp is a type of MR lamp that has a nominal diameter of 2 inches, typically has a confined beam, and the light intensity drops off at the edge of the beam.

[0019] Referring to FIG. 1 , a conventional low voltage display lamp 10 is illustrated. The lamp generally includes a reflector 12 having a single reflective construction 14 and a base or neck 16 extending from a first end of the reflective construction. SLR configurations are parabolic (or elliptical) and include a reflective coating. A conventional halogen light source 18 is disposed within the reflector 12 . Terminals 22, 24 are connected to the light source and project through base 16 to electrically connect the base to a lamp socket (not shown). Edge 30 is located at the second or open end of the first retroreflective construction. The rim defines an opening for receiving a lens or light-transmissive cov...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a bi-curved lamp. The lamp includes a high-intensity discharge light source (54) and a reflector (102). The reflector is disposed to receive light from the high-intensity light source and direct the light in a desired manner. The reflector includes a first light reflecting conformation (108) for forming a substantially uniform spot beam angle and a second light reflecting conformation (110) different than the first conformation.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] This invention relates to high intensity discharge lamps. The present invention relates to specific applications in conjunction with MR spot lamps and will be described with particular reference to MR spot lamps. However, it should be understood that the present invention can also be used in other similar applications. [0002] "MR" stands for a multifaceted reflector, ie a pressed glass reflector having an inner surface (reflective surface) consisting of facets and covered with a reflective coating. These facets provide optical control by collecting light from the source to form a concentrated beam. Some MR lamps have reflectors with smooth inner surfaces rather than facets, but are still customarily called MR lamps. [0003] The reflective coating of the MR lamp can be dichroic or aluminum. Dichroic coatings are typically thin multilayer dielectrics (non-metallic films) that allow infrared radiation (heat) from a light source to pass th...
