Embodiment Construction

[0015] Embodiments of the present invention provide systems and methods for enhanced haptic feedback. In one illustrative embodiment, a computer-readable medium stores information about the capabilities of a haptic device. A processor receives a media stream having haptic information encoded at a predetermined frequency. The processor uses bandpass filters to extract haptic information from the media stream. Subsequently, the processor generates actuator signals for use in generating haptic effects associated with the haptic information. The actuator signal is based at least in part on information stored in the computer readable medium and is related to the performance of the particular haptic device. After generating the actuator signal, the processor generates an output signal including the multimedia data and the actuator signal. The output signal is in the same format as the input signal. Once the processor has generated the output signal, the haptic device may use the...

Abstract

Systems and methods for enhanced haptic effects are described. One described method includes receiving an input signal having haptic information and multimedia data, the input signal formatted in a first format, decoding the haptic information from the input signal, and determining a parameter associated with an actuator in a haptic device. The method further includes generating an actuator signal based at least in part on the parameter and the haptic information, and generating an output signal comprising the multimedia data and the actuator signal, the output signal formatted in a second format.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 60 / 790,408, filed April 6, 2006, entitled "A Vibrotactile Effects System," the entire disclosure of which application is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention generally relates to haptic control techniques. In particular, the present invention relates to systems and methods for haptic effects. Background technique [0004] Portable devices are rapidly evolving into multifunctional devices that combine computing, communication and entertainment functions in one device. Haptic feedback is increasingly being included in these portable devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, and the like. However, traditionally, portable devices have featured only basic vibration functionality. For example, a mobile phone may only have the ability to turn a vibration actuator on and off with a single amplitu...
