Embodiment Construction

[0020] see now figure 1 , the figure provides an implant 100 specifically for repairing anterior, posterior and / or apical vaginal defects. The implant may comprise any suitable biocompatible material, absorbable or non-absorbable material, synthetic or natural material, or combinations thereof. The implant is preferably a mesh-type material, and in a preferred embodiment, the implant is made from knitted filaments of extruded polypropylene, such as the tradename Ethicon, Inc. (Somerville, NJ). It is a product of GYNEMESH PS.

[0021] Implant 100 has a central body portion 101 with anterior and posterior edges 110, 111, and first and second side edges 112, 113 that are slightly curved as shown. The front edge 110 has a groove 120 extending inwardly therealong and the rear edge has a protruding element 115 extending outwardly therefrom. As shown, the groove and raised elements are generally centered along the anterior and posterior edges, respectively, to aid in proper positi...

Abstract

A pelvic floor implant including a central body portion (101) having an anterior edge (110) having a centrally located recess (120) therein, a posterior edge (111) having a centrally located tab (115), and first and second lateral side edges (112, 113). First and second strap-like extension portions (102, 103) extend outwardly to first and second distal ends from first and second end regions of the posterior edge of the central body portion. The first and second strap-like extension portions extending outwardly at an angle so as to form a substantially 'Y' shaped implant in combination with the central body portion. First and. second pockets are located at the first and second distal ends of the first and second strap-like extensions respectively, each having a closed end substantially adjacent to the distal end of the strap-like- extension, and having an open end proximal thereto and opening toward the central body portion.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an implant suitable for repairing various symptoms of pelvic floor prolapse, and more particularly to a mesh and a method for implanting the mesh for anterior and / or posterior pelvic floor repair. Background technique [0002] In the United States, approximately 200,000 women undergo surgery for pelvic organ prolapse each year. Pelvic organ prolapse usually involves one or more of the uterus, bladder, or rectum descending down the vagina toward the vaginal opening (and in rare cases protruding beyond the vaginal opening). Older women or women who have had several children are more likely to have pelvic organ prolapse. Traditional vaginal surgery to treat these symptoms has a high failure rate between 30-40%. Complex and delicate abdominal, vaginal, and laparoscopic procedures (eg, abdominal sacral colpopexy, transvaginal sacrospinous ligament fixation, and laparoscopic sacral colpopexy) have been developed to reduce t...
