Embodiment Construction

[0034] Throughout the drawings, the same reference signs will be used for corresponding or similar elements.

[0035] figure 1 A communication system 100 is involved that includes a video-on-demand VoD streaming server 110 for streaming video content to clients (represented in this description by set-top boxes 112, 114, 116). Each STB contains a buffer 120 in which the stream is initially buffered before the information in the stream is decoded and passed to the TV 130 . TV is also connected to STB114 and 116, which is not in figure 1 displayed in . Streaming server 110 has the task of delivering frames in a timely manner while buffer 120 is tasked with compensating for network delays. The content itself is stored at media storage devices 140, 150, such as conventional carousels. In the example described, the storage devices 140, 150 are implemented as video storage devices. The network used to deliver the stream to the STB is not disclosed, whereas in figure 1 Severa...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method and a streaming server (110) for timely delivering of frames / packets to a client. The method includes fetching of stream data from an operating cog (310, 210) in a calendar wheel (200) and by use of the fetched stream data the frame / packet indicated in the operating cog is transmitted from its location in a video storage (140) to the client. The stream data includes information on stream, movie and frame. Optionally also information on packet is provided.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to delivering frames from a video streaming server to a set-top box, and more particularly to scheduling frames to be delivered in a timely manner. Background technique [0002] A video streaming server is a device capable of streaming hundreds or thousands of video streams to set-top boxes at customer premises. The content itself can reside on CD, traditional turntable, flash drive or even RAM. The most used storage device today is the traditional magnetic disk due to its low price per data volume. [0003] Streaming video requires precise timing considering the point in time at which a particular frame was sent relative to the previous frame. In addition, consider the point in time at which each packet belonging to that frame is sent, which requires precise timing. Depending on the amount of data to be transferred in a frame, the frame contains one or several packets. If frames are not sent in time, the vid...
