Embodiment Construction

[0013] The present disclosure details a method and system for modeling materials using generalized constitutive models. A generalized model may include multiple behaviors that are combined without regard to the particular material being modeled. The generalized model may also include a plurality of couplings, each of the couplings being associated with at least one behavior of the plurality of behaviors. As with the multiple behaviors, the multiple couplings are combined regardless of the material to be modeled. Thus, unlike the conventional approaches described above, the systems and methods of the present disclosure do not use as their starting point models that include behavior and couplings selected according to the particular material to be modeled.

[0014] The methods and systems of the present disclosure select from the plurality of behaviors and couplings defining the generalized constitutive model those behaviors and couplings that are appropriate for the particular...

Abstract

A method of modeling a material using a generalized constitutive model includes assembling a plurality of behaviors, the plurality of behaviors assembled without reference to a particular material to be modeled, and assembling a plurality of couplings, each of the plurality of couplings associated with at least one of the behaviors of the plurality of behaviors and defined without reference to a particular material to be modeled. The method also includes selecting at least one behavior from the plurality of behaviors to define a model for a particular material, performing simulations using the model for the particular material to define a simulation output, and making a determination regarding the material according to the simulation output. A system is also provided to carry out the method.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to methods and systems for modeling an article of manufacture, such as a consumer product. In particular, the present invention relates to computerized methods and systems for constitutive modeling of such articles. Background of the invention [0002] Finite element analysis (FEA) has been of great help in reducing product cost and improving product quality. Once a computer model is built for a given material, the model can be used to determine how a product using that material might respond, for example, to a variety of different loading conditions. Performing computer simulations instead of performing tests in a laboratory can save significant time and money. [0003] Currently, most material models are established on a case-by-case basis. In other words, a test matrix is established to organize a set of tests designed to obtain information about the performance of a material under various loads. Exe...
