Embodiment Construction

[0012] First refer to figure 1 , the wheel hub 10 used to drive the wheels of the motor vehicle is rotatably mounted on the suspension standard part (not shown) of the motor vehicle through a bearing unit 11, the bearing unit includes an outer stationary ring 12, and the outer stationary ring has a through bolt fixed to the standard ( not shown) flange 13. Locked to the hub 10 is a rotatable inner bearing ring 14 which forms an inner race for one of the two sets of balls 15 , 16 of the bearing unit.

[0013] The hub has a cylindrical surface 17 directed toward its axially outer end, to which a drive ring 18 is secured by means of outer axial splines or teeth 19 for transmitting torque from the housing 30 of the constant velocity joint to the hub. Terms used herein such as circumferential, radial or axial are to be understood relative to the central axis of rotation x of the hub.

[0014] The drive ring 18 is locked axially securely against the inner bearing ring 14 by cold f...

Abstract

A driving ring (18) is fixed to the rotatable hub (10) of a hub bearing unit for providing torque transmission from an outer bell (30) of the constant velocity joint. The bell (30) has a tubular projection (31) in telescopic relation with the driving ring (18). A first end surface (33) of the tubular projection (31) faces a second surface (22) of a rotatable ring (14) of the hub bearing unit. The driving ring (18) and the tubular projection (31) have mutually engaging splines (19, 32). The hub and the constant velocity joint are releasably axially secured by a rigid cap (40) received in the cavity of the bell and axially abutting against a shoulder (34) within the bell, and a screw (43) connecting the cap member to the hub (10) in an axially tractive relationship. This axial traction causes axial compression of an annular seal (21) which is fitted between said first (33) and second (22) surfaces and provides continuous sealing action around the engaging splines (19, 32).

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a coupling between a constant velocity joint and a hub bearing unit of a motor vehicle. Background technique [0002] Known arrangements are known from patent publications US2002 / 0070506A1 and US6354952B1 in which the wheel hub receives drive torque from the constant velocity joint housing through a straight splined coupling. To this end, a ring is fastened to the hub, which has an axially outer ring gear which can be inserted telescopically into a tubular projection which has an inner axial ring gear which is the outer part or "housing" of the constant speed joint. Both the toothed ring and the tubular projection are provided with respective annular grooves in which elastic snap rings (or circlips or seeger rings) fit, axially locking the hub to the joint. [0003] The conventional arrangement described above, while very durable, has limitations due to insufficient sealing. The aforementioned elastic ring has at its ends two...
