Problems solved by technology

However, the complexity of prior art fuel nozzle swirler castings required expensive machining and thus made it very difficult to employ reverse vane configurations
[0008] Furthermore, prototype fuel nozzles in prior art designs are costly and time consuming to manufacture
In prior art designs, the swirl vanes were integral to the swirl vane casting, which greatly limited the ability to modify prototype hardware to optimize fuel delivery and mixing

Embodiment Construction

[0016] figure 2 and 3 A partial assembly drawing showing a gas turbine central hub assembly 32 and independently connectable swirl vanes 34 is depicted. While only a single exemplary blade is shown, it is representative of multiple blades. The exemplary swirl vane 34 includes a generally hollow structural body 36 including at least one fuel delivery passage 38 and corresponding at least one fuel port 40 defined within the structural body 36 . Gas ports 40 may be circular or non-circular and may be formed using drilling, electrical discharge machining (EDM), or any other known process. The gas ports may be formed on either the suction side or the pressure side of the blade, or both, and may be perpendicular or inclined relative to the surface of the blade.

[0017] Preferably, the structural body 36 includes a plurality of fuel delivery passages 38 and corresponding fuel ports 40 . At least one connection protrusion 42 is cooperable with the structural body 36 and is connec...

Abstract

The invention relates to an insertable pre-drilled swirl vane for a premixing fuel nozzle. A swirl vane is independently connectable to a central hub assembly of a gas turbine. The swirl vane includes a structural body (36) and at least one fuel delivery passage (38) including a corresponding at least one fuel port (40) defined within the structural body. At least one connecting tab (42) is cooperable with the structural body and is connectable to the central hub assembly.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to fuel nozzles in gas turbines including fuel / air premixers, and more particularly to fuel nozzles including individually insertable pre-drilled swirl vanes. Background technique [0002] A typical industrial gas turbine premix fuel nozzle may feature a cast swirl vane assembly in which a circular arrangement of shaped hollow vanes is used to swirl the intake air. The hollow vanes also serve as fuel delivery channels, where each vane is provided with several gas port holes drilled into the sides through which fuel is injected into the passing air stream. [0003] Gas turbine manufacturers are currently intensive in research and engineering programs to produce new gas turbines that will operate efficiently without producing undesirable air polluting emissions. The major air polluting emissions typically produced by gas turbines burning conventional hydrocarbon fuels are oxides of nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and unburned hy...
