Embodiment Construction

[0026] To obtain interdigitated structures with micron-scale micron features, one can combine and focus two or more streams, split the combined stream into separate combined streams, then recombine and further focus the flow. This discussion will refer to fluid manipulation that produces interdigitated flows of different fluids as "fluid folding." This discussion also refers to fluid structures that perform operations such as combining, focusing, splitting, and recombining as "folding cascades."

[0027] The term "focusing" as used herein means that two or more streams of different fluids are combined into a combined stream whose transverse extent in width is at least less than the sum of the transverse extents of the streams before combining. Typically, the lateral extension of the width of the combined stream after focusing is approximately equal to the lateral extension of one of the streams before combining. For example, if the combined stream is composed of one "strip" ...

Abstract

An electrode structure has a layer of at least two interdigitated materials, a first material being an electrically conductive material and a second material being an ionically conductive material, the materials residing co-planarly on a membrane in fluid form, at least one of the interdigitated materials forming a feature having an aspect ratio greater than one. A method of forming an electrode structure includes merging flows (10,12) of an electrically conductive material and a second material in a first direction into a first combined flow (16), dividing (20) the first combined flow in a second direction to produce at least two separate flows, each separate flow including flows of the electrically conductive material and the second material, merging (24) the two separate flows into a second combined flow, repeating the merging and dividing flow as desired to produce a final combined flow, and depositing the final combined flow as an interdigitated structure in fluid form onto a substrate such that at least one of the materials forms a feature in the structure having an aspect ratio greater than one.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an interdigitated electrode structure. Background technique [0002] Many devices such as batteries, fuel cells, electrical interconnects, etc. can benefit from tightly spaced interdigitated strips of different materials. The term "strip" as used herein means, a thread or other shape of material which consists only of that material. It does not mix with adjacent strips of other material. [0003] Some problems arise when trying to make closely spaced interdigitated bars. In one approach, compressed flow focusing is used to produce superior characteristics of the functional material in paste form. Examples of this approach can be found in US Patent No. 7,765,949 issued August 3, 2010 and US Patent No. 7,799,371 issued September 21, 2010. The approach taken in these patents involves combining materials into a "co-laminar" flow, where three laminar flows of two different materials are brought together to form one flow,...
