Embodiment Construction

[0019] Reference will now be made in detail to example embodiments illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Wherever possible, the same reference numbers will be used throughout the drawings to refer to the same or like parts. Figures are not necessarily drawn to scale.

[0020] The aforementioned problem of household residents not being aware of a tripped circuit breaker is overcome by embodiments of the present invention. Specifically, the present invention provides a notification system operable to detect a circuit breaker trip or power loss event and communicate via telephone, cell phone, text message, email, smartphone application, or any other feasible The method communicates the occurrence of this event (and / or lack of power to the device) to the user of the system. Arc fault circuit breakers (AFCIs), combined arc fault circuit breakers (CAFCIs), ground fault circuit breakers (GFCIs), electronic circuit breakers, and standard thermal-magnetic circuit breakers can be ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a circuit breaker trip notification system and method. The present invention provides circuit breaker notifications to users. The present invention encompasses systems, apparatus and methods for: monitoring the position of an operating handle of a circuit breaker; sensing a change in the position of the operating handle of the circuit breaker to the trip position; generating an identifier representative of the circuit breaker whose operating handle is in the trip position the first signal; communicating the first signal to the communication device; and providing notification to a user via the communication device of a trip event within the identified circuit breaker. A number of additional aspects are disclosed.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 61 / 509,786, filed July 20, 2011, entitled "RESIDENTIAL BREAKER STATUS INDICATOR," the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety . technical field [0003] The present invention generally relates to devices, systems and methods adapted to provide notification when a circuit breaker is tripped. Background technique [0004] Circuit breaker panels are used to protect electrical circuits from damage due to overcurrent conditions such as overloads, relatively high levels of short circuits, or ground fault conditions. To perform this function, the circuit breaker panel contains circuit breakers, which typically contain switching units and trip units. A switching unit is coupled to an electrical circuit (ie, a line and a load) such that it can break and close electrical paths of the electrical circuit. The switch unit comprises a pa...
