Problems solved by technology

[0002] While search engines have the ability to consider geographic constraints when picking results for a query, the ability to specify the geographic boundaries of a query is often limited by the ability to specify recognized, nameable places

Embodiment Construction

[0012] Some search engines look for documents that are not related to geography. For example, searches on abstract topics such as "C-shell scripts," "hydrocarbons," or "Stokes' Theorem" are often understood to be looking for Information. However, many queries such as "Thai restaurants," "travel," "population," and "mountain climbing" often find information that is geographically restricted in nature.

[0013] Many web search engines have both a general web search mode and a local search mode. For example, the BING service provided by Microsoft Corporation has options to perform "web search" and "local search". In web search mode, the query is usually interpreted to find general web documents, while in local search mode, the query is usually interpreted to find a specific place. For example, in web search mode, the query "Thai restaurants" may return documents containing concepts related to Thai food (e.g., a Wikipedia article on Thai cuisine or a newspaper review of Thai re...

Abstract

Search engines may allow users to interactively add and modify geographic constraints through the use of maps. In one example, a user enters a search query, and the search engine determines whether the query is modifiable with respect to geographic constraints. If the query is modifiable with respect to geographic constraints, the search engine can provide an interactive map by which the user can specify geographic boundaries. The search engine can then use the geographic boundaries as constraints on the search, and can return documents related to the geographic area indicated by the boundaries. The user can zoom in or out on the area defined by the boundaries or can move the boundaries, thereby interactively focusing, defocusing and modifying the search geographically.

Description

Background technique [0001] Many types of queries are directed to specific geographic areas. While certain types of queries have no discernible geographic component (for example, searches for "Javascript code to process web forms"), many queries—when properly understood—are restricted to specific geographic regions. For example, a query for "restaurants" often requires "find restaurants at a particular location." When a query is interpreted as looking for geographically restricted information, search engines typically assume that the location is the user's current location. Accordingly, a search engine can estimate a user's location from available information (eg, the Internet Protocol (IP) address from which the query was sent). Users often have the option to override the implied location by using text to further limit the query with geography—for example, "restaurant 98052" or "restaurant Raymond Washington" could be interpreted as looking for locations in Raymond, Washing...
