Embodiment Construction

[0022] Fixed-rate block-based compression techniques require methods to efficiently encode images at low bit rates without significantly sacrificing image quality. Adding local per-region transform and quantization steps before any subsequent encoding and / or compression steps reduces the amount of data to be encoded and / or compressed to maintain image quality while achieving the desired target bit rate. To decompress a region, the compressed data may first be fully or partially decompressed according to the underlying compression scheme (depending on the implementation). A reconstruction transform is then applied to produce an approximation of the original uncompressed data. If any coefficients are discarded during quantization, those coefficients are assumed to be zero for reconstruction transform purposes.

Abstract

The present invention discloses a method for compressing an image, which includes decomposing the image into one or more regions. Select regions of the image for evaluation. If the selected region does not meet predetermined compression acceptance criteria, the region is transformed and quantized. The predetermined compression acceptance criteria may include a specific bit rate, a specific image quality, or a combination thereof. If the region does not meet predetermined compression acceptance criteria after it has been transformed and quantized, then transform and quantization settings are adjusted and the region is transformed and quantized using the adjusted settings. The region is then encoded when predetermined compression acceptance criteria have been met. The encoding may include an additional compression stage.

Description

[0001] Related Application Cross Reference [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 61 / 547,648, filed October 14, 2011, and U.S. Nonprovisional Application No. 13 / 651,020, filed October 12, 2012, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference incorporated herein as if fully set forth herein. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to image compression, and in particular to a method for region-based image compression. Background of the invention [0004] Lossy compression techniques require methods to efficiently encode images at lower bit rates without significantly sacrificing image quality. Fixed rate compression schemes generally have poor image quality at rates significantly lower than four bits per pixel. Some existing variable rate compression techniques such as Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) apply some form of transform and quantization. [0005] Some methods of reducing the amoun...
