Embodiment Construction

[0040] In an embodiment, the present invention may be a system and method for enhancing the data transmission capability of a hybrid optical fiber cable (HFC) network, the HFC network having a cable head end, at least one optical fiber, and at least one optical fiber node, The optical fiber node is terminated on at least one CATV coaxial cable (CATV cable). This CATV cable is usually connected to multiple other branch CATV cables to form a CATV tree and branch network. Usually, a large number of different types of communication equipment such as set-top boxes, cable modems, Ethernet terminals will be connected to this CATV tree and branch network from different places.

[0041] Although standard (for example, prior art optical fiber nodes) or slightly improved prior art optical fiber nodes can generally be used in the present invention, in a preferred embodiment, the optical fiber nodes themselves have some unique properties ( For example, it can work in the following different ...

Abstract

System and method to extend the data carrying capacity of a hybrid fiber cable (HFC) network by adding wideband RF signal capability above 1 GHz, and replacing at least some CATV active devices such as amplifiers with a new type of Coax Domain Node (CDN) device that acts to segment the CATV cable portion of the HFC network into a series of smaller domains. The CDN generally filter RF signals from 5-865 MHz, while amplifying and passing RF signals over 1 GHz. Upstream capability is enhanced because the CDN intercept 5-42 MHz upstream signals from each domain and convert to 1 GHz+ signals. Downstream capability is also enhanced because the CDN can take efficiently encoded 1 GHz+ digital data, QAM modulate it, and locally inject into each domain without crosstalk between domains. The system pushes data management and downstream from the head end to the CDN, creating more throughput.

Description

[0001] Cross reference of related applications [0002] This international application states that the US patent application 13 / 346,709 "HFC CABLE SYSTEM WITH WIDEBANDCOMMUNICATIONS PATHWAY AND COAX DOMAIN NODES" filed on January 9, 2012 by the inventor of Shlomo Selim Rakib (HFC cable system with broadband communication path and coaxial cable domain node )” priority. Technical field [0003] The present invention relates to the common field of cable television and hybrid fiber optic cable systems, and in particular relates to providing extended functions and network access. Background technique [0004] Cable television (CATV) was first born in the late 1940s. As a way to send TV signals to houses in poorly received areas via coaxial cables, it has been improved and expanded over the years to enable cable media to transmit The increasing amount of different types of digital data including digital electronics and broadband network data. [0005] Over the years, this system from the ...
