Multiplexing and transmission of multiple data streams in a wireless multi-carrier communication system

ActiveUS20050058089A1Facilitate power-efficientFacilitate robust receptionEnergy efficient ICTTransmission path divisionMultiplexingCoding block
Techniques for multiplexing and transmitting multiple data streams are described. Transmission of the multiple data streams occurs in “super-frames”. Each super-frame has a predetermined time duration and is further divided into multiple (e.g., four) frames. Each data block for each data stream is outer encoded to generate a corresponding code block. Each code block is partitioned into multiple subblocks, and each data packet in each code block is inner encoded and modulated to generate modulation symbols for the packet. The multiple subblocks for each code block are transmitted in the multiple frames of the same super-frame, one subblock per frame. Each data stream is allocated a number of transmission units in each super-frame and is assigned specific transmission units to achieve efficient packing. A wireless device can select and receive individual data streams.

Accelerated large data distribution in overlay networks

InactiveUS20050015511A1Increase total available bandwidthDecrease amount of timeSpecial service provision for substationEnergy efficient ICTData partitioningBroadband networks
A Method and apparatus for dynamically discovering and utilizing unused resources for practical and efficient creation of optimized network mechanisms for data distribution. Proposed techniques for data distribution, assembly, routing and scheduling in broadband networks can be implemented as content-level server platform architecture enabled by application-level control plane. Such a platform accelerates content transfer, mirroring and replication. It applies coordinated data partitioning and resource discovery and sharing of information replication by multiple network systems. Furthermore, it harvests the unutilized bandwidth in the network by disassembling the large content to be distributed into different components. These components are then routed in spatially and temporally diverse routes through multiple paths and trees and assembled at the destination nodes. The result is accelerated content distribution, added security, scalability and robustness. No modifications of existing network communication protocols is required.

Method for caching and delivery of compressed content in a content delivery network

A content delivery network (CDN) edge server is provisioned to provide last mile acceleration of content to requesting end users. The CDN edge server fetches, compresses and caches content obtained from a content provider origin server, and serves that content in compressed form in response to receipt of an end user request for that content. It also provides “on-the-fly” compression of otherwise uncompressed content as such content is retrieved from cache and is delivered in response to receipt of an end user request for such content. A preferred compression routine is gzip, as most end user browsers support the capability to decompress files that are received in this format. The compression functionality preferably is enabled on the edge server using customer-specific metadata tags.

Method for radio communication in a wireless local area network and transceiving device refers to wireless local area networks (WLAN) consisting of a multitude of transceiving devices of users (14, 15, 16 . . . N). Simultaneous scanning by their antenna beams in different directions by the transceiving devices (with the transceiving devices being in reception mode) and transmission of an omnidirectional signal in the form of calibration signal and data package by one of the transceiving devices of the network (with the transceiving device being in transmission mode), reception of the signal by the transceiving devices operating in reception mode and subsequent orientation of their antenna beams in the direction of signal source. The recognition and orientation is performed during the period of reception of the calibration signal. The Method increases the range of a WLAN, reduces the transmission time and improves quality and reliability of communication. Each transceiving device (1) includes at least one directional antenna (3) featuring a controllable directional pattern, switched-over by unit (4), reception / transmission mode switch (5), receiver (8), transmitter (10) and controller (11). Additionally a unit for signal detection (13) is incorporated in the device.

System and method for providing high-quality stretching and compression of a digital audio signal

An adaptive “temporal audio scaler” is provided for automatically stretching and compressing frames of audio signals received across a packet-based network. Prior to stretching or compressing segments of a current frame, the temporal audio scaler first computes a pitch period for each frame for sizing signal templates used for matching operations in stretching and compressing segments. Further, the temporal audio scaler also determines the type or types of segments comprising each frame. These segment types include “voiced” segments, “unvoiced” segments, and “mixed” segments which include both voiced and unvoiced portions. The stretching or compression methods applied to segments of each frame are then dependent upon the type of segments comprising each frame. Further, the amount of stretching and compression applied to particular segments is automatically variable for minimizing signal artifacts while still ensuring that an overall target stretching or compression ratio is maintained for each frame.

A system and method are disclosed for improving the remote display of graphics images by the redirection of rendering and the optional use of image data compression. Instead of sending graphics commands over a network and rendering on a remote computer system, graphics commands may be automatically redirected by modified OpenGL functions to local graphics devices without explicit involvement by the graphics application. The modifications to a set of the OpenGL functions on the local system are transparent in the normal mode of rendering and displaying locally. After an image is rendered locally, it may be read back and sent across the network. A standard X Server on the remote system may be sufficient to support this methodology. An X Extension for data decompression on the remote system, however, may allow for more efficient image transmission through the use of image data compression.
