A distributed quantizer architecture can be used to separate the quantizer's gain requirements (related to metastability issues) from the clock speed limitations of the Sigma-Delta modulator (related to modulator stability). In this way, Sigma-Delta modulators can operate at higher speeds or consume less power without needing to suffer from metastability problems.
