The method is applied to a terminal and comprises the steps: emitting radio frequency signals according to the preset emission strength; receiving the radio frequency signals; comparing the receiving strength of the radio frequency signals with the preset strength threshold value, wherein the strength threshold value is set according to the emission strength; and confirming whether an object approaches the terminal according to the comparative result. The device comprises a radio frequency emission module, a radio frequency receiving module, a comparing module and a confirming module. A distance sensor is replaced by adopting radio frequency signal emitting and receiving manners; the detection for the approaching of an object can be realized without opening pores on the terminal; the appearance of the terminal is not influenced and the aesthetic property of the terminal is improved greatly.
