Embodiment Construction

[0029] The drawings illustrate various exemplary implementations of vitrectomy instruments (interchangeably referred to as "vitrecutters") with illumination capabilities that provide for selectively adjusting Ability to cut illuminated areas around the tip.

[0030] Figure 1A to Figure 1B A vitreous cutter 100 is shown and used as an example. The vitreous cutter 100 may include a housing 110 having a nose piece 115 extending therefrom. The vitreous cutter 100 may also include a hollow vitreous cutting probe or needle (hereinafter “probe”) 120 having an outer cutting member 121 . The proximal end of outer cutting member 121 may be received within or otherwise connected to housing 110 . The distal end 123 of the outer cutting member 121 includes a cutting tip 125 . Such as Figure 1C As shown in , in some implementations, probe 120 may also include an inner cutting member that is slidable within outer cutting member 121 . The inner cutting member 200 may have a cutting ed...

Abstract

A vitrector that includes an adjustable illumination aperture is described. The vitrector may include a probe and a light sleeve assembly extending along and substantially surrounding the probe. The light sleeve assembly may include a plurality of optical fibers. At least a portion of the optical fibers are operable to provide illumination so as to define an illumination aperture about the vitrectomy probe. A portion of the optical fibers may be encapsulated. The light sleeve assembly may be adjustable along a length of the probe, providing adjustment of the illumination aperture to increase or decrease an area of illumination provided thereby.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application requires November 1, 2012 Submitted U.S. provisional application serial number 61 / 721,216 priority of the provisional application, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of vitreotomes, and more particularly, to illuminated vitreotomes with adjustable illumination apertures for providing adjustment to the area of illumination provided around the tip of the knife. Background technique [0004] Vitrectomy is typically used during ophthalmic surgery, such as vitreo-retinal surgery involving the surgical removal of the vitreous in the eye. The vitreous consists of the clear, colorless, gel-like substance that fills the interior of the eye from the iris to the retina. During some procedures to correct vision impairment, a vitrectomy is generally used to cut and remove a portion of the vitreous as needed ...
