[0101] figure 1 to 3 (comparative)

[0102] As mentioned above, GB167763 (to Marguerre) describes a system in which steam from a lower temperature water accumulator is forced by a power machine acting as a compressor into a higher temperature water accumulator where the steam is Due to forced condensation, the temperature and pressure in this accumulator increase during storage. The power machine recovers the stored energy by allowing the steam from that accumulator to expand through to do work before being returned and condensed in the lower temperature water accumulator. The advantage of such a system is that work is performed directly on the working fluid and the energy is conveniently stored in a small volume of liquid.

[0104] figure 1 A similar energy storage system embodying the same prior art concept is shown, where the working fluid undergoes a two-phase transition to store energy. In this preferred system, each tank has an upper outlet for ev...

Abstract

A thermal energy storage system has a first vessel 10 and a second vessel 20 connected by power machinery 30. Working fluid is stored as a saturated liquid / vapour mixture. During storage, vapour from the first vessel is compressed, and then transferred to the second vessel via a regenerator 50. The temperature and pressure of the working fluid in the second vessel 20 increases, and the temperature in the first vessel 10 decreases during storage. The stored energy is recovered by the vapour returning through the regenerator 50 and power machinery 30 where it expands to produce work before condensing back into the first vessel, possibly through a second regenerator 40. The regenerator 50 comprises a gas permeable, solid thermal storage medium which, during storage, stores superheat and some latent heat from the vapour passing through it. The storage medium exhibits continuously increasing temperature profiles during storage and a small temperature difference with the surrounding vapour, thereby minimising irreversible losses during the thermal energy transfers.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to systems and methods for storing and recovering energy, particularly systems and methods for storing and recovering energy with thermal storage. Background technique [0002] The inflexibility of nuclear, solar, and wind-based renewable energy generation raises many issues for using these technologies to supply major portions of national or regional electrical grids. One such problem is the need to store and recover electrical energy to prevent disruption to the power supply due to variable power supply, and specific issues of energy storage cost, flexibility, and achievable energy density. Many energy storage technologies have been developed to solve this problem, including pumped hydraulic storage, flywheel storage, compressed air energy storage (CAES, including isothermal and adiabatic CAES) and pumped thermal energy storage, such as the applicant's earlier application WO2009 / 044139. [0003] In the 1920s and 1930s...
