Abstract

The invention provides a housing for an electronic device comprising an aluminum layer enclosing a volume comprising a radio frequency (RF) antenna. The housing includes a window aligned with the RF antenna; the window includes a non-conductive material filling a cavity in the aluminum layer; and a thin aluminum oxide layer adjacent to the aluminum layer and adjacent to the non-conductive material; wherein the non-conductive material and the thin The aluminum oxide layer forms an RF transparent path through the window. A housing for an electronic device including an integrated RF antenna is also provided. A method of manufacturing the housing of the above-mentioned electronic device is provided.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments described herein relate generally to housings suitable for electronic devices that include radio frequency (RF) antennas. More specifically, embodiments described herein relate to metal housings suitable for portable electronic devices that include radio frequency antennas. Background technique [0002] Antenna architectures are important components of consumer electronics. Housings and structural parts are often made of conductive metal, which can be used as a ground for the antenna. However, antennas require non-conductive areas or other isolation to provide good radiation patterns and signal strength. To solve this problem, conventional designs include plastic antenna windows or plastic slits in the housing to separate the conductive metal. However, this approach destroys the continuous visual shape of the device, thereby degrading the aesthetics of the metal surface. Furthermore, replacing the metal portion of the housing with a sof...
