Embodiment Construction

[0066] Standard medical reference planes and descriptive terms are used throughout this specification. Radial planes divide the body into left and right sections. The medial radial plane divides the body into bilaterally symmetrical left and right halves. The coronal plane divides the body into front and back. The transverse plane divides the body into upper and lower parts. Front means toward the front of the body. Posterior means towards the back of the patient. Up means towards the head. Down means towards the feet. Medial means toward the midline of the body. Lateral means away from the midline of the body. Axial means toward the central axis of the body. Off-axis means away from the central axis of the body. Ipsilateral means on the same side of the body. Contralateral means on the opposite side of the body. These descriptive terms may apply to living or dead bodies.

Abstract

Arthroplasty components include an articular surface and a bone-facing surface. The bone-facing surface bears at least one anchoring element adapted for an oblique implantation trajectory. The articular surface includes a larger radius of curvature in the superior-inferior direction than in the anterior-posterior direction. An inferior chamfer may be present on the articular surface. Instruments and implantation methods are also disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to anchoring elements and articular surfaces for human or veterinary implants. Background technique [0002] The disclosed anchoring elements are used in situations where exposure is difficult, the implant trajectory is oblique to the implant site, or the plant site is tapered, conical, or wedge-shaped. For example, the disclosed anchoring elements are used in the context of glenoid implants for shoulder arthroplasty such that preparation of the glenoid and implantation of the glenoid component occurs along an oblique surgical approach and implantation trajectory. An oblique or anterior-lateral approach to the glenoid is technically simpler and less invasive than a lateral trajectory to the glenoid. This disclosure is made in the context of a glenoid component of shoulder plasty for the purpose of illustrating the relevant principles of the technique. [0003] In total shoulder arthroplasty, the glenoid implant is attac...
