Embodiment Construction

[0028] Traditional similarity scoring schemes tend to overestimate the similarity of items due to failing to account for attribute redundancy. Attribute redundancy includes duplicate attribute values as well as attribute values that do not yield additional information that would help users distinguish items from one another. In one embodiment, some attributes represent the actual consumer choice when choosing between two items, while other attributes do not represent the actual options available to the consumer. For example, a consumer looking for a vehicle might end up choosing a red sedan. If the sedan is only red, the color "red" is not really an option in terms of the attributes of the car available to the consumer. However, if the truck is also red, a typical scheme for determining the similarity of two items may overestimate the similarity between the car and the truck because both are red vehicles. This is because typical schemes fail to recognize that the color o...

Abstract

Systems, methods, and other embodiments associated with attribute redundancy removal are described. In one embodiment, a method includes identifying redundant attribute values in a group of attributes that describe two items. The example method also includes generating a pruned group of attributes having the redundant attribute values removed. The similarity of the two items is calculated based, at least in part, on the pruned group of attribute values.

Description

Background technique [0001] Computers use attributes (eg, size, color, flavor, brand, packaging) to characterize and classify items. The corresponding attribute value is provided as descriptive text for the attribute. For example, the attribute "size" has a corresponding attribute value, such as small, medium, or large. Attributes are used in retail analytics applications. In one example, attributes are used to calculate a similarity score, which is a quantifiable scheme for evaluating how similar two items are based on their attributes. Similar items typically have closer sales distributions (eg, sales rates) than dissimilar items. It may be difficult to identify items that are too similar to each other. Various schemes exist for identifying items that are too similar. One approach matches them based on their value for attributes such that the higher the number of identical attribute values between two items, the more similar the two items are.
