System and method for diagnostically evaluating energy consumption systems and components of a facility

A method for diagnostically evaluating energy consumption of a facility includes receiving energy consumption data associated with the facility, generating facility data associated with the facility, and receiving external variable data associated with the facility corresponding to the energy consumption data. The method also includes generating a first energy consumption model for the facility using the facility data, the energy consumption data, and the external variable data. The first energy consumption model corresponds to actual energy consumption of the facility. The method further includes generating a second energy consumption model for the facility using the facility data and the external variable data. The second energy consumption model corresponds to expected energy consumption of the facility. The method also includes diagnostically evaluating the energy consumption of the facility using the first and second energy consumption models.

Energy management method and process using analytic metrics.

InactiveUS20050240427A1Minimize operating costImprove their bottom lineElectric devicesSpecial tariff metersCumulative costEnergy management
A method and process provides an approach to optimizing energy costs or any similar fungible, consumable commodity in real time use by defining and utilizing a novel analytic metric based on the ratio of the actual cumulative cost of the commodity used compared to the absolute minimum cost of the commodity during the time period under consideration. The historical energy management approach uses the price of the commodity and then tries to lower the total cost of energy use during the most expensive time periods. It may not be possible with the existing energy management techniques to be able to meet all the operational requirements of the user and still have the minimum cost of use. As a result of this invention, the user can be guaranteed the optimal energy use at the absolute minimum cost, and if the minimum is not achievable the invention allows the user to quantify how efficient his operation is, compared to the theoretical optimum. The use of a new metric called the Energy Performance Index (EPI) allows this comparison to be made across all energy use platforms. Substantial increases in efficiency, performance and economics can be achieved with this invention.

Building energy usage reduction by automation of optimized plant operation times and sub-hourly building energy forecasting to determine plant faults

The invention provides a method for improved building energy usage reduction by computer automation of optimized plant operation times and sub-hourly building energy forecasting to determine plant faults. The invention provides a computer system to derive the NTL, mechanical heat-up (MHL) and mechanical cool-down (MCL) lags and in conjunction with a readily available interval weather forecast, the system can output various signals to indicate optimized start and stop times for heating and cooling equipment. The algorithm to calculate the 15-minute energy forecast is used to indicate out-of-control conditions in the operation of the plant.

Brushless DC motor control

A method and control system to control a brushless DC motor to a preferred position is provided. The advantages that accrue to a system employing the method and apparatus to control the brushless DC motor to a preferred position include optimizing response time, energy usage, coil heating, and ability to hold to a fix position. The method to control the brushless DC motor to a position comprises monitoring actual position of the brushless DC motor, monitoring energy used by the brushless DC motor, and determining a commanded position of the brushless DC motor. A zero torque commutation method is employed to control the brushless DC motor to the commanded position only when a time-rate change in the commanded position is less than a first threshold, a difference between the commanded position and actual position is less than a second threshold, and, the monitored energy used is less than a third threshold. A peak torque commutation method is employed to control the brushless DC motor to achieve the commanded position when the time-rate change in the commanded position is greater than the first threshold, the difference between the commanded position and actual position is greater than the second threshold, or the monitored energy used is greater than the third threshold.
