[0025] The presently disclosed methods and apparatus enable neighbor discovery (ND) of base stations in a communication system, more particularly automatic neighbor discovery performed by base stations by means of access terminals. That is, an access terminal that detects wirelessly broadcast identification information from a base station may communicate such information to other base stations to assist the base station in the ND. Once ND is performed, the base station may update the base station's network (eg, RAN) to exchange information between neighboring base stations via any one or more means such as a gateway / network to achieve full operational capability. Manual configuration of newly added (or removed) base stations can be eliminated by using identification information (eg, pilot ID) that has been normally detected by the access terminal and reported to the base station during handover.
