[0012] The following description relates to systems and methods for determining degradation of an engine particulate filter based on flow through a secondary exhaust component fluidly coupled to an exhaust pipe of an engine. Such as figure 1 As shown, the vehicle includes an engine capable of propelling the vehicle via combustion. A particulate filter and a secondary exhaust assembly are disposed along the exhaust pipe, with the particulate filter positioned upstream of the secondary exhaust flow assembly. The secondary exhaust assembly consists of two parallel paths such as figure 2 shown. The parallel first and second exhaust paths are each located outside (eg, externally) of the exhaust duct. The second path further includes a metal filter capable of trapping soot in the exhaust flow outside the exhaust pipe. When the particulate filter in the exhaust pipe deteriorates, it can leak relatively large amounts of soot. Leaking soot may flow to a secondary flow assembly wh...

Abstract

The present invention relates to systems and methods for detecting particulate filter leaks. Methods and systems are provided for determining degradation of a particulate filter in an exhaust conduit. In one example, a method may include diverting the exhaust gas to a secondary flow assembly including a filter, and determining the degradation based on a time interval between successive / subsequent filter regenerations of the filter in the secondary flow assembly.

Description

technical field [0001] The present description generally relates to methods and systems for detecting particulate filter (PF) leaks. Background technique [0002] Particulate matter filters are increasingly used in automotive exhaust systems to reduce the concentration of particulates in engine exhaust. When soot accumulates on the particulate filter to a threshold level, a filter regeneration process may be used to burn off the accumulated soot under controlled engine operating conditions. However, over time, such particulate filters may suffer from an irreversible reduction in capture efficiency when the filter develops cracks caused by uncontrolled temperature excursions during filter regeneration. Loss of capture efficiency of the particulate filter may result in increased particulate matter emissions well above regulatory limits. [0003] Increasingly stringent particulate matter emission standards and proposed government-mandated on-board diagnostic (OBD) requirement...
