Abstract

The present invention provides methods and systems for improving tire uniformity. More precisely, one or more parameters contributing to harmonics of the measurement process of the uniformity measurement performed for the tire may be identified. The measurement process harmonics may be process harmonic effects associated with obtaining uniformity measurements of tires, for example associated with out-of-roundness of road wheels used to load tires during uniformity measurements with a uniformity measuring machine process harmonic effects. Measurement process harmonics may arise solely from the acquisition of uniformity measurements and may not contribute to actual tire non-uniformity. Once identified, one or more parameters associated with the measurement process harmonics may be used to correct the tire's uniformity measurements to account for the measurement process harmonics. Tire manufacturing may then be modified based on the corrected measurements to improve tire uniformity.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to tire uniformity, and more particularly to improving tire uniformity by using multiple tire rotations in a tire uniformity measurement machine to identify measurement process harmonics. Background technique [0002] Among certain quantifiable properties of a tire, tire non-uniformity is related to symmetry (or lack thereof) with respect to the tire's axis of rotation. Unfortunately, conventional tire building methods have a high chance of producing tire unevenness. During tire rotation, the inhomogeneities present in the tire structure generate periodically varying forces at the wheel axis. Tire non-uniformity is very noticeable as these force variations are transmitted as noticeable vibrations to the vehicle and the vehicle occupants. These forces are transmitted through the vehicle's suspension and can be felt on the seats and steering wheel of the vehicle, or as noise in the passenger compartment. The amount of vib...
