Problems solved by technology

[0013] Therefore, in this case, an attempt by the serving base station to reroute / redirect a specific NAS message to the dedicated core network may fail, which in turn may result in the network being unable to establish / maintain service to the UE that sent the NAS message

[0116] Figure 7 Another exemplary sequence diagram indicating a process for rerouting NAS messages is shown. In this example, the base station 5 assists the default MME 9A in determining whether rerouting to the DCN is possible.

[0117] Steps S701 to S703 correspond to Figure 5 Steps S501 to S503, so for the sake of simplicity, their description is omitted here.

[0118] In step S705 (corresponding generally to step S505), the base station 5 (using its RRC module 64) extracts the NAS message from the received RRC message and forwards the NAS message to the selected (default) MME 9A (e.g. via Embed the NAS message in a suitably formatted S1 message such as "NAS Message Request", etc.). However, in this case the base station 5 also includes in the message information identifying the type of core network that can be rerouted (or that an associated DCN has been deployed). For example, this information may be provided in the form of a list of reroutable CN types, a list of r...

Abstract

A system is described wherein a default MME (9A) receives a NAS message (S501, S505) from a mobile device (3D); sends a rerouting request (S509) to the base station (5) serving the mobile device (3D), and Include information identifying a dedicated group of MMEs (9A) to which the NAS message should be rerouted. If no dedicated MME (9D) is available, the default MME (9A) receives a message from the base station (5) that reroutes NAS messages to the default MME (9A) instead of the dedicated MME (9D). The default MME (9A) continues to serve the mobile device (3D), or the default MME (9A) rejects the NAS message.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to communication systems. The present invention is applicable to standards according to the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) or their equivalents or derivatives such as the Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) and the Long Term Evolution of UTRAN (LTE) (E-UTRAN), including LTE-Advanced ) operating wireless communication systems and their equipment are of specific but not exclusive relevance. The invention is of particular but not exclusive relevance to the use of dedicated core networks. Background technique [0002] Under the 3GPP standard, a "NodeB" (or "eNB" in LTE) is a base station through which mobile devices connect to the core network and communicate with other mobile devices or remote servers. To be able to do this, the mobile device establishes a so-called Radio Resource Control (RRC) connection with the serving base station. For the sake of brevity, this application will use the term ...
