[0040] overview

[0041] Compared to relying on camera-mediated indirect view augmented reality systems, direct view augmented reality systems have lower latency and provide a more realistic interaction with the real world, as well as a more natural viewing experience of the real world. Unfortunately, implementing a direct view augmented reality system presents a different set of challenges. For example, it is difficult to display synthetic graphics in a manner that enables the eye and brain to interpret the synthetic content at the expected depth of the real world view. This is especially true as the eye and brain attempt to focus and combine light that originates many meters away from the eye with light that originates only a few millimeters away. These distances are orders of magnitude different from each other, and the different distances make it problematic to create a relatively seamless, unblurred composite view. Further, because image artifacts are created, light f...

Abstract

Image compensation for occluded direct view augmented reality systems is described. In one or more embodiments, the augmented reality device includes an emissive display layer for presenting emissive graphics to the user's eyes; and an attenuation display layer for presenting an attenuation graphic between the emissive display layer and the real world scene to block A light that emits a graph's real-world scene. The bright region compensation module expands the attenuation pattern based on properties of the viewer's eyes, such as pupil size, to produce an extended attenuation pattern that blocks additional light to compensate for unintended bright regions. The dark area compensation module masks unintended dark areas with a replicated pattern in the emissive display layer that reproduces the appearance of a real world scene in the unintended dark areas. The camera provides the light data used to generate the reproduced graphics.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to image compensation for occluded direct view augmented reality systems. Background technique [0002] Augmented reality is promising for providing information related to a person's current environment. With augmented reality, visual images are added to the scene of the environment that the person is currently viewing. A visual image is a synthetic graphic image (hereinafter also referred to as "synthetic graphic") that is computer-generated and added to a real-world scene. For example, synthetic graphics can be overlaid or superimposed on top of real-world scenes. The composite graphics can also be inserted into the real world scene such that the inserted visual image of the composite graphics appears to be partially behind the real world object at a certain depth in the field of view. By finely orchestrating the insertion of synthetic graphics, synthetic graphics can appear integrated with the real wor...
