The transformed image has a gamma as a function of CIE 1976 L*, which includes a dark region having a rising slope, a light region having a falling slope, and a plateau region having a slope constantly within 5 percent of a maximum value in said plateau region. The rising slope is at least twice as large as the absolute value of the falling slope. The plateau region is between 10 L* and 30 L* wide. Gamma is a derivative of visually perceived reproduced CIE 1976 L* versus scene CIE 1976 L*. Gamma has a maximum slope between 1.5 and 2.0.

System and method for capturing color images that extends the dynamic range of an image sensor using first and second groups of pixels

A technique for digitally capturing a high contrast color image involves simultaneously capturing image data from bright and dark areas using an image sensor with pixels of the same color that have different sensitivities to the bright and dark areas. The image data from the different sensitivity pixels is then used to generate a final image that includes features from both the bright and dark areas. An embodiment of a digital imaging system includes an image sensor with a first group of pixels that have a first sensitivity to a first color and a second group of pixels that have a second sensitivity to the same color. Image data that is captured by the two groups of pixels is brought to a common scale by a scaling unit before the image data is used to generate demosaiced image data. The scaled image data is used by a demosaic unit to determine intensity values for the first color at all of the pixel locations. Errors in the demosaiced intensity values that result from capturing the first color image data with pixels of two different sensitivities are corrected by an error correction unit to generate a final image that accurately depicts the original high contrast color image.

A method for high dynamic range compression uses a modified cumulative histogram as a compression curve. This curve is computed from the cumulative histogram of the image with constraints that the local derivative on the curve does not exceed a certain limit. The limit is fixed along the curve or the limit is variable, taking into account noise characteristics at various pixel values. To provide appropriate detail preservation, a smoothing filter is used to separate the image into an illumination image, referred to as a base image, and a detail image, and the compression curve is applied to the base image only. The compression method provides high dynamic range compression of the image while preserving the global contrast perception. Conventional global algorithms for high dynamic range compression are not capable of achieving this result. The proposed high dynamic range compression method also minimizes noise amplification while lightening the dark areas during image compression.

The vision system includes a UV light source for directing UV light through the transparent strip and a camera for inspecting the translucent filter (13a) to obtain an image of the filter (13a). The image is processed to identify dark regions which enable the integrity of the seal to be determined.

Rather it can be universally adapted to a variety of different scenes, and the exposure control effect is not influenced by the position of scenes in the actual bright region / dark region and block distribution.

The present invention performs gradation conversion linearly on an image signal when the image signal is darker than a preset value. Consequently, the dark region of the image is not distorted nonlinearly, and the gradations of shadows and hair can be reproduced in full richness. On the other hand, gradation conversion is performed nonlinearly on image signals if the image signal is brighter than a preset value. The nonlinear conversion in this case: (1) has a slope that effectively equalizes an average noise amplitude of the image signal without being based on the output gradation value, and (2) is offset so as to be continuous with the gradation conversion characteristic of the dark area gradation conversion unit. Through condition (1), the level-dependent noise in the bright region is equalized. Furthermore, through condition (2), gradation differences and gradation reversals do not occur at the boundary between the dark region and the bright region.
