Embodiments of the present invention provide a fingerprint chip initialization method and apparatus. The method comprises: among HAL SO libraries of multiple manufacturers, determining an HAL SO library of a target manufacturer matched with a fingerprint chip in a terminal device, wherein, the HAL SO libraries of the multiple manufacturers are stored in the terminal device in advance; triggering a drive program for running the fingerprint chip by using the HAL SO library of the target manufacturer, wherein, the drive program is used for applying for a resource for the fingerprint chip; and completing initialization of the fingerprint chip. By sharing one same firmware version, different terminal devices can determine the HAL SO library of the target manufacturer matched with the built-in fingerprint chip, without the need for developing different firmware versions matched with fingerprint chips, so that the development test cost of terminal device manufacturers is saved.
