Abstract

Systems and methods for operating a hybrid powertrain that includes an engine and a motor / generator are described. The systems and methods adjust torque converter clutch opening responsive to whether or not a motor / generator is available to provide a negative torque to a driveline. Further, the motor / generator and the vehicle's engine are operated to provide a desired amount of driveline braking.

The methods and systems may be particularly useful for hybrid vehicles and provide wheel torque via an engine and a motor positioned along a shaft that provides input to a transmission. Background technique [0002] The vehicle is expected to decelerate at a predetermined rate under selected vehicle operating conditions. For example, if the driver fully releases the accelerator pedal, it is expected that the vehicle will decelerate at a predetermined rate until the vehicle reaches creep speed.
