Abstract

The present invention addresses the problem of: providing a liquid-crystal composition which has a high refractive index anisotropy ([delta]n), a low rotational viscosity ([gamma]1), and a large elasticity constant (K33) and further has a high voltage holding ratio (VHR) and a negative dielectric anisotropy ([delta][epsilon]); and providing a liquid-crystal display element of excellent display quality, which includes the liquid-crystal composition and is prevented or inhibited from suffering display failures including dropping marks, image persistence, and display unevenness and which combinesa low operating voltage, a high transmittance, and a high response speed. The liquid-crystal composition, which has negative dielectric anisotropy, has a value calculated by the following expression(I) in the range of 1-50: |[delta][epsilon]| / P*100 expression (I) where |[delta][epsilon]| is the absolute value of dielectric anisotropy and P ([mu]m) is the spiral pitch, and comprises one or more of compounds represented by the general formula (np-1) and the general formula (np-2).
