Provided are: a
liquid crystal alignment film that exhibits good resistance to AC
image persistence or residual DC-derived
image persistence, and has good adhesion to a sealing agent; and a
liquid crystal alignment agent that can be used to obtain a
liquid crystal display element which inhibits in-plane variations in brightness during black displaying, and has excellent contrast characteristics. This liquid
crystal alignment agent is characterized by containing component (A) and component (B). Component (A): a
polymer (A) having a repeating unit represented by formula (1). Component (B): a
polymer (B) having a repeating unit represented by formula (3). (In formula (1), R1-R4 each represent a
hydrogen atom, a
halogen atom, an
alkyl group having 1-6 carbon atoms, or the like, at least one of R1-R4 is a group as defined above but, excluding a
hydrogen atom. Y1 represents a
divalent organic group having a
moiety structure represented by formula (H). In formula (3), X3 represents a tetravalent
organic group derived from an
aromatic acid dianhydride, Y3 represents a
divalent organic group having a
moiety structure represented by formula (m). R30 represents a
hydrogen atom or an
alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms. Z31 and Z32 each represent a
hydrogen atom or the like.) (Q3 represents -(CH2)n- (n is 2-20), any -CH2- may be substituted by -O-. Note that
oxygen atoms are not directly bonded together. Any
hydrogen atom on the
benzene ring may be substituted by a monovalent organic group. * represents a bond.).
