Method of performing fast bilateral filtering and using the same for the display of high-dynamic-range images

A method of performing bilateral filtering and using the method for displaying high-dynamic-range images is presented. The method reduces the contrast of the image while preserving detail of the image. The presently disclosed method incorporates a two-scale decomposition of the image into a base layer encoding large-scale variations, and a detail layer. The base layer has its contrast reduced, thereby preserving detail. The base layer is obtained using an edge-preserving bilateral filter. The bilateral filter is a non-linear filter, where the weight of each pixel is computed using a Gaussian in the spatial domain multiplied by an influence function in the intensity domain that decreases the weight of pixels with large intensity differences. The bilateral filtering is accelerated by using a piecewise-linear approximation in the intensity domain and appropriate subsampling.

Display device and method for driving the same

It is an object to provide a display device in which a problem of light leakage from a liquid crystal element in black display is reduced or overcome and the contrast is improved. It is another object to provide a pixel circuit having a function to control a lighting state of a backlight based on each pixel. These objects are achieved by turning off a light-emitting element in display of a black gray scale, and by providing a light-emitting element in each pixel and providing, in a pixel circuit, a function to individually control lighting and non-lighting of the light-emitting element depending on a gray scale to perform display. When a backlight is provided in each pixel, a light-emitting element that is a backlight is turned off when a black gray scale is displayed, whereby reduction in contrast due to light leakage from a liquid crystal element can be prevented.

A liquid crystal display apparatus, provided with liquid crystal compensation plates and λ / 4 plates on both sides of a liquid crystal cell, in a sequence that the liquid crystal compensation plates, then the λ / 4 plates. Further provided is Rth compensation film between the λ / 4 plate and linear polarization film. Set substantially at zero is a retardation Rth1 in a perpendicular direction in a range from the linear polarization films to the λ / 4 plates, excluding the λ / 4 plates. This gives a retardation (in a perpendicular direction) for optically compensating the liquid crystal cell a closer position to the liquid crystal cell. As a result, a broad angle of visibility can be maintained, without losing a balance between viewing angle characteristics from the above position (or the bottom position) and those from the right position (or the left position), while it is possible to prevent contrast ratio in a front direction from being lowered. Therefore, an LCD having good display quality can be realized.

Brightness level converting apparatus, brightness level converting method, solid-state image pickup apparatus, brightness level converting program, and recording medium

A brightness level converting apparatus improves a contrast of an image represented by an image pickup signal output from a logarithmic conversion solid-state image pickup device, so as to obtain a natural image. For this purpose, the brightness level converting apparatus converts brightness levels in the image pickup signal output from the solid-state image pickup device which logarithmically converts an incident light quantity. In the brightness level converting apparatus, a brightness level converting section converts the brightness levels in the image pickup signal by using a brightness level converting function expressed by an S-shaped curve which indicates the relation between an input brightness level and an output brightness level and includes one inflexion point. Therefore, the contrast in a low brightness level range in the image pickup signal is reduced. At the same time, the contrast in a high brightness level range is reduced while appropriately keeping a gradation. With this, the contrast in an intermediate brightness level range in the image pickup signal is improved considerably. Therefore, the image represented by the image pickup signal whose brightness levels are converted becomes a further natural image.

Method for eradicating liquid crystal display dynamic trailing smear

The invention discloses a method for eliminating dynamic streaking of liquid crystal display. The concrete steps include: (a). convert images of two following frames into black and white brightness signal images; (b). compare the pixels at the corresponding position in the black and white brightness signal images and retain the pixel with a smaller grayness value; (c). form a frame of black frame insertion images (Gn) with the group of pixels obtained after the comparison of each pair of pixels; (d). insert the black frame insertion images (Gn) into images of two following frames. The method of the invention is to compare continuous image signals of two frames, and form a frame of 'new grayness distribution signal' with the darker pixels of each pixel position as the black frame insertion image to reach the purpose of lowering MPRT and eliminating streaking of dynamic images. The invention can not only overcome the shortcoming of the low efficiency of the black frame insertion technique, but also overcome the inadequate elimination of dynamic blurs and the high decline of the contrast in gray frame insertion technique. In addition, the method of obtaining insertion frames is simple and accessible, thus greatly saving the production cost.

Ambient light incident upon a polarizer 105 passes through a liquid crystal layer 103 and is then reflected by reflective films 116 via transparent electrodes 115. The reflected light passes again through the liquid crystal layer 103 and the polarizer 105 and is output to the outside thereby displaying an image in a reflective displaying mode. The reflective films 116 are disposed at locations corresponding to the respective transparent electrodes 115 such that they are spaced from each other. In this structure, some ambient light passes through the spaces between adjacent transparent electrodes 115, however, such light is not reflected by the reflective films 116 toward the outside and thus a reduction in contrast due to such reflection is prevented.

To provide an active matrix type liquid crystal display device having fine display performance, an interlayer insulating film 104 covering TFTs 102, 103 formed on a substrate 101 is first flattened by mechanical polishing typified by a CMP. Then pixel electrodes 106, 107 are formed thereon, and further, an insulating layer 108 covering the pixel electrodes is formed. And then, the insulating layer 108 is flattened by second mechanical polishing so that the surfaces of the pixel electrodes and the surface of the insulating layers 112, 113 form the same plane. By this, a difference in level disappears, and it is possible to prevent lowering of contrast or the like due to poor orientation of a liquid crystal material, diffused reflection of light, and the like.
