Connecting Head Mounted Displays To External Displays And Other Communication Networks

An audio and / or visual experience of a see-through head-mounted display (HMD) device, e.g., in the form of glasses, can be moved to target computing device such as a television, cell phone, or computer monitor to allow the user to seamlessly transition the content to the target computing device. For example, when the user enters a room in the home with a television, a movie which is playing on the HMD device can be transferred to the television and begin playing there without substantially interrupting the flow of the movie. The HMD device can inform the television of a network address for accessing the movie, for instance, and provide a current status in the form of a time stamp or packet identifier. Content can also be transferred in the reverse direction, to the HMD device. A transfer can occur based on location, preconfigured settings and user commands.

Methods and devices for optical aberration correction

Near-to-eye displays within head mounted devices offer both users with and without visual impairments enhanced visual experiences either by improving or augmenting their visual perception. Unless the user directly views the display without intermediate optical elements then the designer must consider chromatic as well as other aberrations. Within the prior art the optical train is either complex through additional corrective elements adding to weight, cost, and size or through image processing. However, real time applications with mobile users require low latency to avoid physical side effects. Accordingly, it would be beneficial to provide near-to-eye displays mitigating these distortions and chromatic aberrations through pre-distortion based electronic processing techniques in conjunction with design optimization of the optical train with low weight, low volume, low complexity, and low cost. Further, it would be beneficial to exploit consumer grade low cost graphics processing units rather than application specific circuits.

Visual-Experience-Optimized Super-Resolution Frame Generator

An image processor generates a Super-Resolution (SR) frame by upscaling. A Human Visual Preference Model (HVPM) helps detect random texture regions, where visual artifacts and errors are tolerated to allow for more image details, and immaculate regions having flat areas, corners, or regular structures, where details may be sacrificed to prevent annoying visual artifacts that seem to stand out more. A regularity or isotropic measurement is generated for each input pixel. More regular and less anisotropic regions are mapped as immaculate regions. Higher weights for blurring, smoothing, or blending from a single frame source are assigned for immaculate regions to reduce the likelihood of generated artifacts. In the random texture regions, multiple frames are used as sources for blending, and sharpening is increased to enhance details, but more artifacts are likely. These artifacts are more easily tolerated by humans in the random texture regions than in the regular-structure immaculate regions.
