An apparatus for filling vials comprises a shelving unit defining an array of storage locations. The shelving unit may be an array in an XY plane or one or more carousels. A plurality of storage containers are provided, each removably carried by one of the storage locations. A counting and dispensing unit, a source of vials, a label printer and application unit or units, and an output device are also provided. The output device may take a variety of forms such as an output chute, which is preferably used when a capping unit is provided, an output conveyor, a plurality of output lanes, and an output carousel, which may be a dedicated carousel or a portion of the carousel providing the plurality of storage locations. A computer controlled engagement device provides motion in a Z direction. The engagement device may be comprised of a first stage for engaging the storage containers and a second stage for engaging the vials. A computer controlled system carries the engagement device and moves the engagement device in XY directions among the plurality of storage locations, counting and dispensing unit, source of vials, label printer and application unit, and output device. Methods of operating and refilling the vial filling apparatus are also disclosed.

The amount of light provided by the array of irradiation sources is adjusted by the computer so that ocular signals from the image sensor are within a targeted range. Enhanced, adaptive, photorefraction is used to observe and measure the optical effects of Keratoconus. Multiple near-infrared (NIR) sources are preferably used with the photorefractive configuration to quantitatively characterize the aberrations of the eye. The infrared light is invisible to a patient and makes the procedure more comfortable than current ocular examinations.

A computer control system operates with an instruction set to provide automated administration of health care to a patient. In a preferred embodiment of the invention a central monitoring station receives data from a plurality of remote testing units. Each of the testing units is custom configured for a particular patient and is made to provide optimal care for that individual alone. Similarly one monitoring unit may serve multiple patients and transmit the data to a central monitoring computer via the telephone lines. Medical procedures are then administered to the patient and results taken as data. The data is made available to the central monitor so that proper medical interpretation is enabled. A number of novel steps in the programming of the system are taken to assure that the right patient is being monitored, that the patient is being tested properly and that the system is being monitored appropriately.

Apparatus for use in a storage and retrieval system for product held in containers is provided. The apparatus includes multiple, parallel spaced-apart support members (41) defining a plurality of rows (20), each adapted to support a base of a plurality of containers thereby forming a container store. One or more conveying means (44) is engageable with containers in a row (20) to transport the containers longitudinally within that row, the conveying means (44) movable transverse and below the rows. A computer control system automatically controls operation of the loading means and conveying means. The loading means (45) may include a transfer conveyor (49) extending beneath at least a portion of said rows and moveable transverse to said rows below said rows. Product may be stored in a bulk storage zone (27) in which containers of product are stored in frames (50), an intermediate storage zone (40) and a low storage zone (65). A first automated retrieval system retrieves selected stacks of containers from the intermediate storage zone (40), and a second automated retrieval system retrieves individual containers, partial stacks or stacks of containers from the low storage zone (65). Product orders are collated at a collation zone (34) and a conveying means (19) is in communication with each zone for delivering product between zones. Methods of storage and retrieval are also claimed.
