Problems solved by technology

The large number of consumable options requires a large part count and inventory for the user and can confuse the user and increase the likelihood of installing the wrong consumable
The large number of consumable options can also cause lengthy torch setup time(s) and make it difficult to switch between cutting processes that require different consumable arrangements in the torch, placement and installation of consumables in the torch Usually performed on site one part at a time
For example, selecting and installing the correct set of consumables for a particular cutting task prior to a cutting operation can be tedious and time consuming
Furthermore, when old components are used with new components, the selection, assembly and installation of these components in the field can cause alignment problems or compatibility issues
Existing consumables can experience performance issues during torch operation, such as inability to maintain proper consumable alignment and spacing
Furthermore, current consumables include considerable amounts of expensive materials (e.g., Vespel™) and often require relatively complex manufacturing processes, which result in significant manufacturing costs and hinder their widespread commercialization, production, and adoption

Embodiment Construction

[0091] figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of an exemplary cartridge 100 for a plasma arc torch, in accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the invention. As shown, the cartridge 100 includes an end cap 106 (eg, a crown), a swirl ring 102 , an electrode 104 , and a nozzle 108 generally symmetrically oriented about a longitudinal axis A. As shown in FIG. The cartridge 100 can additionally comprise a resilient element 122 and / or a sealing device 150 . Cartridge 100 is capable of using a blowback contact start mechanism for contact starting a plasma arc torch once assembled into the torch. In particular, the electrode 104 can be a spring-advanced electrode, meaning that a resilient element 122 (eg, a spring) can exert a separation force on the proximal end 124 of the electrode 104 away from the end cap 106 and toward the nozzle 108 Bias electrode 104 .

Abstract

A consumable cartridge (1000) for a plasma arc torch is provided. The consumable cartridge includes an outer component (1002) defining a substantially hollow body, an inner component (1004) disposed substantially within the hollow body of the outer component, and a hollow region between the rear portion of the inner component (1004) and the outer component (1002). The inner component (1004) includes a forward portion configured to axially secure and rotatatably engage the outer component (1002) to the inner component (1004) and a rear portion substantially suspended within the hollow body of the outer component. The rear portion is axially secured and rotatably engaged with the outer component via the forward portion. The hollow region (1022) is configured to receive a torch head to enablemating between the rear portion of the inner component and a cathode of the torch head.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. Serial No. 14 / 824,946, filed August 12, 2015, which claims the benefit and priority of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 036,393, filed August 12, 2014. The entire contents of these applications are owned by the assignee of the current application and are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to cartridges for contact-start plasma arc torches, and more particularly to one or more replaceable, low-cost cartridges, each having a plurality of integrally formed components. Background technique [0004] Heat treatment torches, such as plasma arc torches, are widely used for high temperature processing of materials (eg, heating, cutting, gouging and marking). A plasma arc torch generally includes a torch body, an electrode mounted within the torch body, an emitter insert disposed within ...
