Embodiment Construction

[0022] In the following description of various illustrative embodiments, reference is made to the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof, and in which is shown by way of illustration the manner in which various embodiments of the invention may be practiced. It is to be understood that other embodiments may be utilized and structural and functional modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the present disclosure.

[0023] Access Points (APs) provide wireless connections to remote stations (STAs). Many residential and commercial wireless local area networks (WLANs) contain competing access points in sufficient numbers that signal degradation and network congestion cause substantial packet loss. The AP detects this condition and then uses an Automatic Channel Selection (ACS) algorithm to switch WLAN channels. However, such an AP may select a channel frequency that is not supported by a previously connected STA. These algorithms are insufficient to pr...

Abstract

A method performed by an AP to transfer remote stations operating on a WLAN from one channel frequency to another channel frequency includes registering all remote stations using the access point on afirst channel frequency (405), detecting channel congestion and deciding to switch channel frequency (410). The AP selects a second channel frequency (415), sends one or more channel change messagesto all remote stations to change to the second channel frequency (420) and checks whether all registered remote stations reconnect after switching (425). If any registered remote stations are missingthen the AP selects another channel frequency (415, 420). The AP continues such testing and until all registered STAs have reconnected or all channels have been selected. If all channels have been selected and any STA is still missing, then the AP indicates reconnection failure (440).

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to channel changes in wireless local area networks (WLANs), and more particularly to reliable channel changes for all remote stations (STAs) using a designated access point (AP). Background technique [0002] An Access Point (AP) provides a wireless connection to a Remote Station (STA) in a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN). If the AP detects excessive signal attenuation and packet loss, it uses an automatic channel selection (ACS) algorithm to select a different WLAN channel. However, the ACS algorithm only selects WLAN channels that are not congested, thus ignoring whether previously connected STAs are supported on the new AP channel frequency. The AP does not indicate that the STA is disconnected, so a user monitoring the AP may incorrectly interpret the result as an AP failure. The Wi-Fi Alliance (WFA) does not require APs and STAs to support all 802.11 frequencies. [0003] There are methods of recovering lost ST...
